Local residents got a rare opportunity last week to share concerns regarding public safety and hear directly from the county’s top law enforcement officer, when Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva conducted a town hall forum at La Cañada High School.

Residents in attendance at the Oct. 23 event learned the Department’s Major Crimes Burglary Task Force was working directly in Crescenta Valley Sheriff’s Station service area to help detectives link local property crimes with similar incidents in other areas, which could help identify potential crime rings consisting of repeat offenders.

Additional units are patrolling La Cañada streets as burglary suppression teams and deputies on electric bicycle make the rounds through residential and commercial areas.

Villanueva reminded residents they are their own best defense, advising them to get involved with neighborhood watch efforts and get to know neighbors and local law enforcement members.

He also suggested they safeguard their homes with alarms and spoke on some of the regional and statewide legislative efforts being made to fund rape testing kits and dismantle California’s cash bail system to level the playing field for defendants in court.

After the discussion, the sheriff spoke individually with those in attendance and local elected officials. He later visited the Crescenta Valley station for a tour and to meet directly with staff members.
