LCF Mayor Pieroni to lead hikers on ‘Len’s Loop’ in 4th annual hike

The third annual mayor's hike, Walker's Walkabout.
Last year’s mayor’s hike, led by then-Mayor Terry Walker, drew a large crowd. This year, Len Pieroni will lead participants along “Len’s Loop,” a 1.5-mile trek above Descanso Gardens.

Locals interested in enjoying La Cañada’s pristine trail system while possibly having an audience with Mayor Len Pieroni are invited to participate in the fourth annual Mayor’s Hike Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m. at Descanso Gardens.

“Len’s Loop” will take participants on a 1.5-mile trek along the Descanso Trail, which offers hilltop views looking down on the botanical garden, nearby USC-Verdugo Hills Hospital and more. The trek is of moderate difficulty, so some walkers may want to bring walking sticks for steep declines in terrain.

An inaugural mayor’s hike was organized in 2016 by then-Mayor Jon Curtis and members of La Cañada Flintridge Trails Council and the Parks and Recreation Commission to mark the 30th anniversary of the preservation of the city’s Cherry Canyon area.

The event’s popularity grew in subsequent years as city mayors led hikers along different segments of La Cañada’s 23-mile trails system. Pieroni, who participates in the hike each year, says the hikes promote fitness while showcasing the city’s natural beauty.

“It’s definitely a celebration of our trails and how hard the Trails Council and the city have worked to develop the set of trails we have,” the mayor said. “And it’s a great opportunity to get members of the community outdoors, to get some exercise.”

After hikers complete Len’s Loop, they’ll convene in the Descanso Gardens picnic area for a 10:30 a.m. reception, snacks and free gifts. Representatives from the Greater Los Angeles County Vector Control District will discuss and answer questions regarding mosquito protection.

FYI: Attendants of the fourth annual Mayor’s Hike will meet at 8:45 a.m. at the picnic area of Descanso Gardens, 1418 Descanso Drive, La Cañada Flintridge. Hats, water and sunscreen are advised.
