La Cañada Flintridge City Hall named ‘Project of the Year’ by public works association

City officials celebrated Tuesday La Cañada Flintridge’s City Hall recently being the recipient of a “Project of the Year” award from the American Public Works Assn., which aims to recognize exemplary municipal public works projects.

“It is an honor to be recognized with this award,” Public Works Director Pat Dechellis said in a release issued by the city the day after the Dec. 10 award. “This project was a large-scale undertaking and, with the support of the City Council, city staff residents and the community, it was a great success.”

Dedicated in March 2019, the new city hall was acknowledged by the APWA for its enhanced public access, collaborative work spaces and 7,920 square feet of revenue-generating lease space. The phased construction of the building, which helped prevent a disruption of city service, was another factor in the association’s decision to grant the award.

Mayor Len Pieroni said at Tuesday’s council meeting the La Cañada project was submitted by Irvine-based Griffin Structures, which helped design it. The award was received in the building category for cities with a population of 50,000 and under.

“The city is proud that the former Sport Chalet corporate headquarters has been transformed into a space that is a valuable asset to the community,” Pieroni said in the release.
