Authorities say the garage of a La Cañada Flintridge home caught fire on Sunday after a used fire brick was placed near several combustibles stored in the structure.

The fire occurred just before 3:40 p.m. in the 4600 block of Rockland Place, according to Maria Grycan, community liaison for the Los Angeles County Fire Department. She said the brick was of the type used in backyard fire pits.

Grycan said firefighters were able to contain the spread of the flames to the home’s garage, but there was smoke damage throughout the residence. It’s estimated the blaze caused $85,000 in damages.

She could not say how many people were inside the home at the time of the fire and if any injuries were reported.
