A La Crescenta couple are the parents of the first baby of 2019 to be born at USC Verdugo Hills Hospital, it was announced Friday.

Rachel Grace Martin, the daughter of Marie and Ryan Martin, arrived at 4:19 p.m. on Jan. 2 and weighed 6 pounds, 1 ounce at birth. Rachel has two older sisters, according to hospital spokesperson Carolyn Kamii.

With her arrival, two people were named winners of USC Verdugo Hills’ annual New Year’s baby guessing contest. Vince Takas won a $100 Amazon gift card for coming closest to naming her birth time of 3 p.m. while Christine Pietrosh McDowell was awarded a gift card in the same amount for guessing little Rachel’s weight exactly. And the Martin family not only went home with their new baby in tow, but a welcoming gift basket filled with goodies provided by area merchants, Kamii said.

As was previously reported, Sun Valley resident Kelleigh Drenten gave birth at Providence St. Joseph Medical Center at 6:35 a.m. New Year’s Day to daughter McKynlee. A few hours later in Adventist Health Glendale, Marwa Mahmood and Salwan Anjo of La Cañada Flintridge welcomed a son, Yosif, who arrived at 10:10 a.m.
