La Cañada History: 10 years ago, Dietrich Riley named All-Area Football Player of the Year

Ten Years Ago

Dietrich Riley, then a junior at St. Francis High School, was named winner of the All-Area Football Player of the Year title by the sportswriters and editors of the La Cañada Valley Sun, Glendale News-Press and Burbank Leader (Times Community News papers). In the fall 2008 season he’d become the first Golden Knights rusher since 2004 to eclipse the 1,000-yard barrier, as he started at running back, outside linebacker and returned kicks for his team. After graduation, he went on to play for UCLA until his college football career was derailed by neck and shoulder injuries.

Twenty Years Ago

The city of La Cañada Flintridge and the LCF Chamber of Commerce in January 1999 unveiled a joint website. The City Council approved $10,000 for the project, with the agreement that the Chamber would be responsible for site maintenance.

Thirty Years Ago

Longtime area pediatrician William Schafer, who first established an office in Montrose in 1950, then shortly thereafter moved the practice to La Cañada, retired to pursue a master’s degree in fine arts.

Forty Years Ago

Local anti-school-busing forces convinced the La Cañada school board to oppose mandatory busing across district lines and then successfully urged the City Council to officially endorse the school board’s stance.

Fifty Years Ago

A real estate advertisement in the Valley Sun showed a four-bedroom, three-bath home in the Country Club Estates section of town was on the market for $69,500 (about $476,000 in today’s dollars).

Sixty Years Ago

The La Cañada school board granted permission to St. Francis High School to use about two acres of district-owned property west of Oak Grove Elementary School for parking for football games. St. Francis officials also indicated an interest in purchasing the property to expand their athletic facilities.
