Crime Report: Sheriff’s officials receive identity theft reports

La Cañada Flintridge

Sept. 23

Identity theft: 1300 block of Descanso Drive. A man reported he received a bill from a company for an account opened via the Internet. He called the company involved and told him it was not his account. A representative said the account would be closed. He later received another invoice for the same amount. When he again contacted the company, he was advised to file a police report to confirm the account did not belong to him.

Sept. 24

Forgery (fictitious checks): 5100 block of La Cañada Boulevard. A woman reported that on Sept. 22 her business partner contacted her to say their joint bank account was showing bounced checks and suspicious activity. Following up with her bank, the woman was shown by a representative two copies of fictitious checks bearing the name of a Los Angeles man that had been used to make payments. The victim stated she does not know the man and she never authorized him to withdraw money from the account.

Identity theft: 4900 block of Crown Avenue. A woman said her wallet was stolen in August while she was at Macy’s in Pasadena. She reported it to the Pasadena Police Department, which in turn told her to report it to the Crescenta Valley Sheriff’s Station.

The victim said she canceled the two credit cards that had been in her wallet at the time of its theft. She also placed an ID theft alert on her credit and contacted the three credit bureaus. She learned from Capital One that someone had subsequently sent them an email purporting to be from her, asking that they change her contact information to a different email address, home address (the one they provided is in San Bernardino) and phone number.

Sept. 25

Identity theft: 4300 block of Hayman Avenue. A man reported that someone had used his personal information on Sept. 8 to obtain a cash loan without his permission. He received a statement for a late payment, contacted the company to say he was not the person who took out a loan, and was told to file a police report.

Identity theft: 1100 block of Roanoke Place. A woman reported that several suspicious transactions were listed on her credit card statement. She canceled that card and opened a new one after her bank gave her full restitution.

On Sept. 16 she received an email from her bank regarding a request to increase her credit limit and to change her contact information. She called her bank to say she had not made that request and learned someone had used her name and social security number to ask for the increased spending limit and to change her contact number. The bank advised the victim to file a police report.

Sept. 26

Vandalism: La Cañada Flintridge Country Club, 5500 Godbey Drive. An employee reported that sometime between 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 25, someone had driven an EZ-Go golf cart belonging to the club up on a curb and cracked its bumper. He reported that no one was authorized to be driving one of the club’s carts at that time.

Sept. 27

Grand theft from unlocked vehicle: 4100 block of Chevy Chase Drive. A man reported that he parked his pickup truck in front of a property at about 5 p.m. and walked around the garden for about five minutes. When he returned to his vehicle, he saw that his lawn mower, hedge trimmers and leaf blower were gone from the bed of the truck.

Sept. 28

Burglary: 3700 block of Normandy Drive. A woman reported that at about 8:45 p.m. she was asleep in her bedroom when she heard noises coming from a home office. Thinking her daughter had arrived home, she texted her to ask why she was making noise. Her daughter texted back that she was not at home.

The woman then heard the garage door alarm. She walked toward the home office and saw that someone had smashed the rear door there, and that the office and some bathrooms had been ransacked.

A deputy responding to her call determined that the suspect(s) had entered by climbing over a locked gate and smashing the rear door, then exited the property via the garage door. The victim was unsure at the time the report was taken what items might have been stolen during the burglary.

Montrose

Sept. 28

Grand theft: 4100 block of Rosemont Avenue. A man reported that four motorcycle parts he’d ordered were taken after a FedEx delivery truck dropped them off at his front door. The company who sold him the parts told him to file a police report to get full restitution.
