Crime Report: Resident arrives home, apparently just in time to stop burglary

Feb. 11

Petty theft: 600 block of Foothill Boulevard. At 6:17 p.m., a Latino of medium build, wearing a burgundy hooded sweater and black pants, stole a gray, hand-held shopping basket filled with personal care items from a store. He was seen getting into a GMC Suburban that was driven out of the parking lot.

Feb. 12

Vehicle burglary: 800 block of Foothill Boulevard. Sometime between 2:30 and 3:49 p.m. someone shattered a Dodge Charger’s passenger-side window and took out of the car a backpack and a laptop.

Feb. 13

Identity theft: 2000 block of Lyans Drive. A man discovered someone had fraudulently used his Social Security number to electronically file a tax return in Massachusetts and the funds owed that state’s franchise tax board had been debited from his Chase bank account.

Burglary: 3700 block of Via Serrano Avenue. Deputies responding to a burglar alarm that sounded at about 7:30 p.m. arrived at the property to find an upstairs glass door had apparently been kicked in and a bedroom ransacked. The home’s owner had left on vacation early that morning and said he would provide a list of any missing items on his return.

Feb. 14

Vandalism over $400: 2100 block of Foothill Boulevard. Responding to a 7 a.m. burglary alarm call, deputies found shattered the front window of a pharmacy that had been burglarized the week before. A piece of concrete was found lodged between the window and its security screen, the latter of which remained intact. The store’s owner said nothing appeared to be missing from the business.

Attempted burglary: 500 block of Palmerstone Drive. At about 7:35 p.m. on Feb. 13 a dark-colored Ford or Chevrolet panel van took off from the driveway of a home when a witness arrived on the scene moments ahead of the resident, who was traveling in a different vehicle. Inside the home, nothing seemed amiss, but the next day the resident found a ladder propped against the wall near the balcony to the master bedroom. On that balcony, he found muddy shoe prints. He then reported the apparent attempted burglary to the sheriff’s station, where it was noted a burglary had taken place the same night on a neighboring street, Via Serrano.

Feb. 17

Burglary, vehicle: 4500 block of Loma Vista Drive. A woman reported that sometime between 11 a.m. Feb. 16 and 11:30 a.m. Feb. 17, someone broke into a company vehicle by shattering the driver’s side window and stole property belonging to the company.
