$7M YMCA renovation returns to Planning Commission meeting Jan. 10 at Lanterman Auditorium

After a months-long hiatus, YMCA of the Foothills will return to the La Cañada Flintridge Planning Commission Thursday evening at Lanterman Auditorium to share updates on a $7-million renovation plan for the Crescenta-Cañada YMCA first unveiled in August.

At their last appearance before commissioners on Aug. 28, commissioners asked for more time to consider neighbor concerns about noise, traffic and safety around the interface of their homes and the 4.69-acre campus.

The panel also asked Y officials to collaborate more closely with those residents in the meantime to make sure major concerns were heard and addressed before the project returned to the commission.

The initial phased building plan included construction of a 24,500-square-foot, two-level parking deck fronting Foothill Boulevard that would add about 70 on-site parking spaces and take from six to eight months to complete. To accommodate traffic flow, the eastern entrance would be relocated to create a four-way intersection at Foothill and Palm Drive.

The second phase involved the demolition of about 6,755 square feet of existing structure to accommodate a new three-story building on the facility’s east side. YMCA officials estimated that could take up to one year to complete and said fundraising was still ongoing.

Late last week, YMCA of the Foothills’ Chief Executive Tyler Wright said the neighbors hired an attorney who’s been in talks with the Y’s attorney and members of a Y committee overseeing the renovation.

“Some of the neighbors are coming up with solutions,” he said. “We have a couple of concepts on the table that we’re working on. [And] the city has come up with a concept. We’re hoping we’re going to come up with a solution that serves everybody.”

The meeting begins at 6 p.m. Lanterman Auditorium is located at 4491 Cornishon Ave., La Cañada. For information, call the Planning Department at (818) 790-8881.

Also scheduled for discussion:

An application filed by Exer Holding Co., LLC., for a conditional use permit for an urgent care facility in a 7,833-square-foot tenant space of a shopping center at 475 Foothill Blvd. in the space previously occupied by Aaron Brothers.

A request for a second-floor review allowing for a 5,062-square-foot two-story residence with two-story attached garage at 4611 Vineta Ave.

Consideration of an amendment to the city’s municipal code extending the terms of the La Cañada Flintridge Design Commission, so they will expire in odd-numbered years.
