LC swim teams win Rio League crowns

Both the La Cañada boys’ and girls’ varsity swim teams won their Rio Hondo League championships last Friday at Pasadena City College.

The boys’ team was sparked by Andrew Nguyen who won two individual events and swam a leg on two winning team relay events and the girls were led by Maryann Boosalis who won two individual events and contributed to the winning of a relay race.

Other boys who figured prominently were Jerrold Lee who won the 100 butterfly (55.15) and swam a leg on two winning relays, Grant Chin who won a race and swam a leg on a winning relay and Daniel Chi and Christian Lawrence who each contributed to two winning relay races.

Nguyen won the 200 freestyle (1:45.78) and the 500 freestyle (4:47.99). Chin won the 200 individual medley (1:58.3).

In team events, the Spartans Wes Lewis, Lawrence, Lee and Nguyen won the 200 medley relay (1:43.87). The team of Bryan Hayos, Lee, Nguyen and Chi took the 200 freestyle relay (1:31.99) and the team of David Chew, Lawrence, Chi and Chin won the 400 freestyle relay (3:21.83).

Chi also came in second in the 200 freestyle ((1:49), Lawrence took second in the 200 individual medley (2:00.76), Hayos came in second in the 50 freestyle (22.94), Lee and Chi took second (4:57.16) and third (5:03.32), respectively, in the 500 freestyle.

Lewis placed third (1:00.30) in the 100 backstroke and Chin and Lawrence placed second (1:01.92) and third (1:03.12), respectively, in the 100 backstroke.

Nguyen, Chin and Lee qualified for the CIF Southern Section Division II preliminaries tomorrow (Friday) at 10 a.m. at Long Beach’s Belmont Plaza.

For the girls, who won their sixth straight league title, Boosalis won the 200 individual medley (2:10.89) and the 100 breaststroke (1:05.7) and swam a leg on the 200 freestyle relay. She and Eunice Kahang, Carolyn Boosalis and Renee Nicholas won the event with a time of 1:44.02.

Dana Follis also won the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:02.63 and came in second in the 500 (5:30.15). Nicholas also placed second in the 50 (25.740 and third in the 100 (55.96).

In other events, Carolyn Boosalis took third in the 50 freestyle (26.25) and third in the 100 backstroke (1:06.39) and Jen Wetzel captured third in the 100 breaststroke.

In team events, the girls took second in the 200 medley relay (1:56.01) and second in the 400 freestyle relay (3:56.42).

Boosalis, Nicholas and probably Follis will compete in the CIF prelims on Friday in Long Beach.

At the league prelims held May 5 at PCC, Nguyen qualified for the final with firsts in the 200 (46.12) and 500 (4:49.38). Lee took first in the in the 100 butterfly (56.630 and Lawrence took the top spot in the 200 individual medley.

Lawrence took second in the 100 breaststroke (1:03.71), Lee in the 500 freestyle (4:53.49) and Chin grabbed third in the 500 freestyle (5:08.35).

Chin also made the final with a second in the 200 individual medley (2:04.79) and fourth in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.14).

Hayos qualified with a second in the 50 freestyle (23.96), Jasper Kim did the same with a third in the 100 butterfly (58.22) as did Lewis and Willie Han who made the cut with a third (1:00.68) and fourth (1:01.74), respectively, in the 100 backstroke.

In the girls prelims, Boosalis clocked the top times in the 100 breaststroke (1:06.4) and 200 individual medley (2:11.15) and Follis came in first in the 200 (2:02.11) and the 500 (5:32.17).

Nicholas qualified for second place in the 50 (26.26) and the 100 (56.27). Carolyn Boosalis made the cut with a fourth in the 50 freestyle (26.41) and a first in the 100 backstroke (1:07.1). Grace Park and Nikki Burns were right behind Boosalis in second (1:08.3) and third (1:08.6), respectively in the 100 backstroke. Wetzel made the finals with a third (1:12.0) in the 100 breaststroke.
