Wedding Consultant Operated Jobyna’s Bridal
Jobyna Cynthia Casey, born Oct. 22, 1935 in Painsville, Ohio, passed away in Palm Springs on Saturday, Sept. 4, 2004 at the age of 68.
Jobyna was married to Joseph Casey in Painsville in 1957; the couple moved to La Crescenta to raise their family. The Caseys recently celebrated their 47th wedding anniversary and split time living in La Crescenta and Palm Springs.
For 40 years, Jobyna was well known in her profession as a bridal consultant and was considered an icon in the bridal business. She owned and operated Jobyna’s Bridal and Tuxedo in Montrose, Glendale, Lakewood and Palm Springs.
She was also served as a bridal consultant to the movie and television industry. Some of her credits included Gremlins, Krull, Scarecrow and Mrs. King, Wiseguys and Remington Steele. She started the largest bridal show in Southern California with the Daily News. She held shows at Pasadena Civic Center, Los Angeles Convention Center, Universal Studios, Elks Club and many others.
Jobyna was the past president of the La Crescenta Woman’s Club and president of the Holy Name Society of St. Theresa Catholic Church in Palm Springs. She was a den mother in the Boy Scouts and a PTA board member for several years. She was the first woman selected to the Montrose Shopping Park board and was nominated for the “Woman of the Year” in her field by the Los Angeles Times.
Jobyna was a well-respected person and business woman in her community. Her daily personality was thoughtful, giving and patient. She often volunteered her time and money to work with the elderly, the physically and mentally impaired. One day, when she was working in her Glendale store, a young girl came into the bridal shop. She asked to purchase a wedding dress. Jobyna thought this unusual because the girl was very young, frail and wheelchair-bound. She inquired as to why the girl needed a gown. The youngster replied that she was dying of cancer and wanted to be buried in a wedding dress. Jobyna’s compassionate personality went to work and she began to look for a special dress. The perfect gown was selected and donated to the young girl. Several months later, the girl died and was buried in her dress. This was one of many examples of Jobyna’s willingness to give to others in need.
Funeral services will be held at St. Theresa Catholic Church, 2800 E. Ramon Rd., Palm Springs, on Saturday, Sept. 11, at 10 a.m. Immediately following, internment will be at the Palm Springs Mortuaries and Mausoleum and Crematory. The family suggests that donations in Jobyna Casey’s memory be made to the Alzhei-mer’s Research Society.
