The Three Stooges, Frankenstein, Part of Alex Film Society's 11th Season

The Alex Film Society presents, at Glendale’s Alex Theatre, programs of classic feature films, cartoons, newsreels and short subjects together with guest appearances by notable personalities. Its mission is to entertain and educate the audience while demonstrating to film owners that there is a market for classic films, and the financial risks involved in film preservation are worthwhile.

AFS’s goal is to present the best possible prints so patrons can enjoy films in the manner for which they were intended. At the same time the Society must pay the expenses associated with our programs and strengthen our ability to maintain and upgrade the film capabilities of the Alex.

_____________

“House of Frankenstein”

Universal (1944)

Showing: Oct. 23

at 2 and 8 p.m.

A deranged Boris Karloff seeks revenge from those who wronged him by harnessing the efforts of Universal’s horror icons. Ably assisted by J. Carrol Naish as the hunchback, John Carradine as Count Dracula, Lon Chaney Jr. back as the Wolf Man and Glenn Strange in his premiere as the Monster, Karloff gives a wonderfully campy performance.

The film is really two stories, one with Dracula doing the work until caught outside by the dawn, and the second more involved portion at Frankenstein’s former castle. Throw in a lovely Gypsy woman with an eye for the Wolf Man; a dash of jealousy and peasants with torches and the stage is set for classic monster mania. Running time: 71 minutes.

_____________

Big Screen Event”

For Stooges fans of all ages, the Alex Film Society’s popular “Stooge-Fest,” held Thanksgiving weekend, has become part of the annual holiday tradition. Admission is $13.50 general admission, $9.50 for groups 10 or more, kids 12 and under, seniors 65 and older, and $7 for Alex Film Society members at the box office with current membership ID.

_____________

“Mildred Pierce”

Warner Bros. (1945)

Showing: Feb. 26 at

2 and 8 p.m.

A mother’s love leads to murder

What’s a mother to do? Joan Crawford gives her signature Oscar-winning performance as Mildred Pierce, the ultimate maternal martyr, in thrall to her own femme fatale daughter (Ann Blyth) in director Michael Curtiz’ film noir classic. Jack Carson, Zachary Scott, Eve Arden, and Bruce Bennett also star in this perfect marriage of melodrama and hard-edged pulp penned by James M. Cain.

“Auntie Mame”

Warner Bros. (1958)

Showing: April 30 at

2 and 8 p.m.

Bright, brash, and devastatingly stylish, “Auntie Mame” is an extravagant feast of a movie.

After dazzling Broadway, “Auntie Mame” became a shining success on the silver screen, thanks to a whip-smart script, colorful characters and a brilliant star-turn by Rosalind Russell as the marvelously madcap society dame who teaches her wide-eyed nephew that “Life is a banquet, and most poor suckers are starving to death!”

Uplifting and uproariously funny, “Auntie Mame” received six Oscar nominations, including best picture, best actress for Russell and best supporting actress for Peggy Cass as the frumpy, yet-unforgettable, Agnes Gooch.
