La Cañada High School’s Regional Occupational Program student graduating ambassadors Alice Cho, Lauren Masters, Anushe Asroff and new ambassadors Kaosar Soufi, Alyse Sakai, Morgan Anderson and Shawn Stewart, hosted the annual joint kickoff meeting Thursday evening, at the Star Café in Montrose. The student ambassadors, ROP counselors and technicians from Burbank and Duarte Unified School Districts attended this round table discussion.
Ross Arnold from the Los Angeles County Office of Education, opened the meeting, congratulating the new ambassadors. He asked them why they took ROP classes, what they learned and how would it help them once they graduate from high school, bridging their answers with their ambassador duties, suggesting this is the information fellow students and parents will ask them as representatives of ROP in their respective schools.
Over dinner the student ambassadors networked, sharing ideas and experiences, as well as expressed concerns about speaking in front of groups.
Their concerns were short lived, as LCHS ROP counselor Linda Morton and ROP technician Mary Ohms arranged for Verta Guynes from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandise to be a guest speaker on the topic of effective communication. Guynes quickly captured the attention of the ambassadors, providing them with presentation skills and techniques on over coming nervousness, how to win and keep the audience’s attention and answering questions.
“I am excited about being an ambassador. I think it will be fun speaking with other students. It will also look good on my college application,” said Anderson.
According to Morton, the new ambassadors have their work cut out will start by assisting her with a student survey.
