The La Cañada boys’ varsity baseball team scored a run in the top of the first inning in its Rio Hondo League game against host San Marino last Friday, but that was the last time the Spartans would lead in the contest.

The Titans tied the score in their half of the frame and proceeded to score nine more runs to trounce La Cañada, 10-1. The loss dropped the Spartans to 8-3 in league and to 13-3 overall.

The Spartans hosted South Pasadena in a league game yesterday (Wednesday). Results were not available at press time.

La Cañada will go on the road to Monrovia today (Thursday) and to Temple City next Tuesday and will host San Marino next Thursday in 3:30 p.m. league contests.

Austin Brady started for the Spartans and was relieved Kevin Thompson in the fourth inning. Brady, who had two of La Cañada’s three hits, both doubles, took the loss.

The Spartans scored their only run on a sacrifice fly by T.J. Trumbo that sent Mitchell Maseredjian home from third base.

Matt Sprowles pitched a three-hit shutout to help La Cañada defeat visiting Monrovia, 2-0, in a Rio Hondo League game on April 27.

In seven innings, Sprowles, who upped his record to 6-1, tossed a wild pitch, walked three and struck out six.

The Spartans scored their first run in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Matt Motia scored from third on a wild pitch by Eddie McKiernan. Andy McNamara knocked Brady with the other run in the sixth inning.

The Spartans collected six hits altogether, all singles by Kelson Brown, Stanley Kim, Steven Lee, Maseredjian, Motia and McNamara.

Brown, Lee and Motia each swiped a base for La Cañada.
