Facts About ‘Bat Boy’

As a member of the Friends of Drama Executive Board, I would like to dispel some of the rumors about “Bat Boy: The Musical.”

FACT: The play was chosen in the Fall of 2004. It went through proper channels prior to the April 19th meeting of the Governing Board.

FACT: The term “all-school musical” means that auditions are open to all students in grades 9-12, not just drama students. While we are extremely grateful when the community supports our productions, most of our audience is generated from within our high school community.

FACT: Friends of Drama strongly feel the material to be presented is appropriate for our audience. Adding the words “May not be suitable for children under 13” to our publicity represents a compromise with the Governing Board and administration to appease any parents who may have concerns.

FACT: The director of the LCHS instrumental music program decided not to have her students participate in this year’s all-school musical before the play was actually chosen. The theatre arts department has respectfully complied with that decision. We are thrilled to have Ms. Hamre playing first keyboard in the pit.

FACT: This year, aside from the teacher’s salary, the LCUSD allotted $300, or less than $2 per student, for the operation of the LCHS theatre arts program. Taxpayer money is not spent on the musical. Friends of Drama, an organization made up of volunteers, raises most of the funds to keep this outstanding program viable.

Facts are not nearly as entertaining as gossip.
