Prepare to Stop, Caltrans Says

Traffic signal is being installed at Angeles Crest Highway and Starlight Crest Drive.Caltrans began construction on a new traffic signal at the intersection of Angeles Crest Highway (State Route 2) and Starlight Crest Drive on Tuesday.

When complete, the new signal will permit a left turn onto Starlight Crest Drive from westbound (downhill) Angeles Crest Highway.

“Instead of having people wait for oncoming traffic, they’ll be able to make left turns more safely onto Starlight Crest Drive,” said Jeanne Bonfilio, public information officer for Caltrans.

According to Bonfilio, a signal for those driving up the highway and turning right onto Starlight Crest is not necessary because motorists “don’t have to deal with oncoming traffic” in that direction.

“I think it will improve safety in the area,” added Steve Castellanos, director of public works for the city of La Cañada Flintridge, which is not involved with the project.

An advance-warning beacon will be installed on westbound Angeles Crest Highway in advance of the intersection to alert motorists of the new signal. New signage, striping and pavement markings will also be installed. The estimated cost of the project is $275,000. The goal of completion is the end of January, weather permitting.
