LC Boys Basketball Slams Prep, 74-33, in Tournament

The La Cañada boys’ varsity basketball team defense was so awesome that it held Flintridge Prep to just five points in two quarters of their La Cañada Holiday Classic pool play game last Saturday.

The Spartans, who improved to 7-1, easily defeated Prep 74-33.

La Cañada continued competition in the Holiday Classic through Tuesday. Results were not available at press time.

La Cañada will travel to Pasadena La Salle next Tuesday through Friday to participate in the Lancers’ tournament.

In the Prep contest, the Spartans led 20-10 at the end of the first quarter, 46-12 at the half and 61-30 after three quarters.

Rhett Anderson, Adam Malik and Abe Malik all had 16 points each. Darren Ho followed with eight points and Andrew Gauthier added six points.

Ross Grandolph, Jason Ridd and Christian Nitu all scored three points. Peter Dominguez chipped in two points and Andy McNamara finished with one point.

By holding Los Angeles Lincoln to 16 points in three quarters, including no points in the first quarter, La Cañada came out on top with a 58-39 victory last Friday in Holiday Classic pool play.

The Spartans led 20-0 at the end of the first quarter, 27-7 at the half and 44-16 after three quarters.

No Spartan had more than nine points, but 12 members of the team scored. Anderson led La Cañada with nine points. Abe Malik and Eric Scott pumped in eight points apiece, including two 3-point baskets each.

Scoring five points apiece were Adam Malik, Ridd and Grandolph, who also hit a 3-pointer. Tucker Heaton and Ho added four points each.

McNamara and Josh Lelo chipped in one 3-pointer apiece. Hitting two points each were Dominguez and Nitu.

Anderson led the Spartans with six rebounds. He also had two assists. Three players, Gauthier, Nitu and Grandolph, pulled down four rebounds apiece. Gauthier also had one steal and one assist and Nitu came through with one assist.

McNamara had three rebounds and two steals and Lelo also had three rebounds and one assist. Dominguez contributed two rebounds and one assist, Abe Malik had two rebounds, two steals and one assist, Garrison Grimes added two rebounds, three steals and one assist and Vince Adamson had two rebounds.

Scott had one rebound, two steals and one assist. Adam Malik came through with one rebound, two steals and three assists. Ridd followed with one rebound and three assists.

Heaton also had two steals and three assists and Ho added four steals.

Pasadena La Salle edged the Spartans, 53-52, on Dec. 13, to hand them their first defeat of the season.

In the nonleague contest, the Lancers opened with a 17-12 advantage after the first quarter. The Spartans held La Salle to three points in the second quarter to go ahead , 26-20 at the half. La Cañada still led 38-36 after three quarters, but the Lancers outscored the Spartans, 17-14, in the final quarter to squeak out the win.

Adam Malik led La Cañada with 16 points. Abe Malik followed with 13 points.
