On Thursday evening, Jan. 19, as part of their California tour, the acoustic guitar trio Language of 3 will be featured in performance at the Coffee Gallery Backstage, 2029 N. Lake in Altadena. The concert begins at 8 p.m.; tickets are $15.

The acoustic-oriented, world-inspired Language of 3 presents three stylistically diverse solo performers and composers in a broad range of venues and settings. For this performance, guitarists Jim Goodin and Matt Richards will be joined by harp-guitarist Adam Werner. Through individual solo sets, each artist presents his highly individual musical style, providing many listeners with a first-time experience in solo acoustic music. The artists also collaborate in duets and trios of both rehearsed and improvised material.

“The concept behind Language of 3 is to provide what we call a performance setting,” explains guitarist Matt Richards. “The three artists have the opportunity to perform their own work and to interact with one another. This provides new listeners with a great introduction to acoustic-based music and offers established fans three superb players on one stage.”

In addition to co-founders Goodin and Richards, the third “chair” features a guest artist. For this performance California-based harp-guitarist Adam Werner will be featured. “We usually feature a guitarist,” explains Goodin, “and players like Richard Leo Johnson, Michael Hewett, David Belmont and Edward Bridge have joined us in our shows. We’ve also worked with acoustic bassist Bill Zola and are pleased to be working with Adam on the California shows. We’re excited to announce in the future we’ll be working with bass guitarist Michael Manring and guitarist Gary Lucas.”

In their individual musical works, the three featured guitarists have earned comparisons to musical luminaries such as Pierre Bensusan, Michael Hedges, Ralph Towner and Larry Coryell. Jim Goodin explains: “Matt and I both believe in stretching the concepts and techniques that are associated with the guitar. Being joined by like-minded players makes for an exciting show for the artists and the audience.” Stylistically, Language of 3 draws upon what they refer to as “a world of influences”, including jazz, Latin, Celtic, Americana, blues and New Age. “There’s always an element of spontaneity that makes each night different,” Goodin explains.

Other area Language of 3 performances include Sunday, Jan. 22, at Kava Dume in Agoura Hills.
