LC Girls’ Varsity Basketball Tops Claremont in Tournament

The La Cañada girls’ varsity basketball team opened up a 20-7 advantage in the first quarter of its Glendora Tournament game last Friday against Claremont and went on to win, 67-44.

The Spartans upped their record to 11-3. They won’t play again until next Wednesday when they will travel to Monrovia to start Rio Hondo League play with a 5:30 p.m. game.

Against the Wolfpack, La Cañada increased its lead to 34-17 at the half and 51-30 after three quarters.

Three Spartans scored in double figures. Jessica Lew was the team leader with 16 points, including four 3-point baskets. Emily Ballard was right behind with 15 points, including three 3-pointers and Mary Kate Hurlbutt contributed 11 points, including three 3-pointers.

Others were Monica An with eight points, including two 3-pointers. Raeanne Butts, Diana Kim and Caitlin Rohan added four points each. Sierra Prescott and Emmilee Ringelberg had two points apiece and Lauren Tsou finished with one point.

In other areas, Ballard had six rebounds, four assists, two blocked shots and one steal. Ringelberg chipped in five rebounds and three steals. Hurlbutt came through with four rebounds, nine assists and one steal. Rohan delivered four rebounds, five steals, two assists and one blocked shot.

An, Anderson and Butts all had three rebounds and An added two assists. Lew had one rebound, two assists and one steal. Kim chipped in one rebound and two steals and Tsou had one rebound and one assist.

Kristine Futalan also had one blocked shot and Prescott had one steal.
