Holding Covina Western Christian to less than 10 points a quarter led to a 55-34 nonleague victory for the Flintridge Prep boys’ varsity basketball team in the Southern California Shootout at Azusa Pacific University last Saturday.

The Rebels, who improved to 8-12 overall and remained 4-1 in league, will host Arcadia Rio Hondo Prep tomorrow (Friday) and Pasadena Poly next Friday in 7:30 p.m. league games.

Prep led Western Christian 17-9 at the end of the first quarter, 27-17 at the half and 43-25 after three quarters.

Andrew Beck led all scorers with 23 points. Aaron Fried followed with eight points, Phillip West was right behind with seven points and Kevin West pumped in five points.

Ryan Lamont and Mark Rodli contributed four points apiece and Brady Thomson and Daniel Hurley chipped in two points each.

In league action last Friday, the Rebels held on for a 44-42 win over host Claremont Webb despite a fourth quarter comeback by the Gauls.

Prep opened with a 14-8 over Webb at the end of the first quarter, led 21-16 at the half and 36-29 after three quarters.

The Gauls outscored the Rebels in the fourth quarter, 13-8, but not quite enough to catch up as Hurley hit a jump shot with five seconds left in the contest to secure the win for Prep.

Beck had a game-high 18 points. Hurley, Thomson and Fried scored nine, eight and six points, respectively. West had two points and Rodli added one point.

A strong second half of play helped the Rebels defeat host Chadwick, 48-38, in a league contest last Thursday.

In the Chadwick contest, the Dolphins actually led 11-9 at the end of the first quarter. Prep closed the gap to 22-21 at the half and went ahead 37-30 at the end of the third quarter.

Prep’s Brendan Brown topped all scorers with 12 points. Beck was next with nine points, including one 3-point basket. Thomson and Hurley followed with eight points each.

Fried pumped in five points, including a 3-pointer, West contributed four points, including a 3-pointer, and Rodli finished with two points.
