Troop 501 Has an Adventure at Lee Vining Canyon

Share

Scouts from Troop 501 traveled to Lee Vining Canyon earlier this month on an adventure very few would even consider.

At an elevation of 8,000 feet and in heavy snowfall the boys, leaders and a Sierra Mountain guide hiked into the canyon and proceeded to build snow shelters. These were built by mounding snow much like a haystack and, once it was hardened, hollowing them out.

The boys then spent the night in the shelters. This experience is one the scouts will not soon forget. They also come away with the knowledge that given the right clothing and gear they would be able to build a shelter which would allow them to survive a night in cold, snowing conditions. TROOP CHILLS OUT -- Members of Troop 501, as they were preparing to begin their hike, are Sammy and Tom Reynolds, Michael and Jeff DeFond, Danny and Ben Gordon, Holden Kilbride, Ken and Robbie Deans, Alex Beebee and Matt and Mike Mulfinger.
