Democrats Hear Review of California Health Insurance Reliability Act

The La Cañada Flintridge Democratic Club met on April 23 at the home of Bill and Elaine Hurd to review the California Health Insurance Reliability Act, SB 840 (Kuehl). The guest speaker, Irma Strantz of the League of Women Voters, spoke on the subject and showed a video about the bill. After, the group had a spirited discussion about the bill.

The goal of the act is to provide fiscally sound, affordable health insurance coverage to all Californians, while providing every Californian the right to choose his own physician, and to control health cost inflation. This act would replace the current system of private insurance with state sponsored coverage for all California residents.

The universal health care proposal that is in SB840 is supported by a number of groups that normally remain neutral, including the League of Women Voters. An independent study, The Lewin Report, shows this program can result in Californians having affordable health coverage while allowing every Californian to choose his own doctor.
