Game Results in for La Cañada Junior Baseball/Softball

Babe Ruth Division

Washington Nationals (Kendall) -14 Red Sox (Borlund) - 2

The game was an exciting pitching duel between Michael McGlashan of the Red Sox and Cole Kendall of the Nationals. The game turned in favor of the Nationals after four innings when the Red Sox struggled with a pitching change and made a variety of errors and poor decisions.

Kendall pitched a full six innings on his way to a 14 - 2 victory for the Nationals. There were few bright spots for the Red Sox, as they need to get back to the fundamentals. (Coach Borlund)

The Nationals improved their record to 5-0 in a victory over the Red Sox. Cole Kendall picked up his third win of the year, pitching a two-hitter, striking out eight and walking only one batter.

Gathering key hits for the Nationals were Jason Yost, Brian McGuigan. Aidan Apel stole four bases and scored two runs. Will Guthrie scored and added his first RBI of the season, (Coach Kendall)

Dodgers (Knopf) -7 A’s (Gosselin) - 5

The A’s and Dodgers played an exciting game of baseball, with the Dodgers edging the A’s in a nail-biter, 7-5. The Dodgers played their best defensive game of the season and showed good discipline at the plate against tough A’s starter John Rodli and his reliever Kien Warren.

Billy Platisa tripled deep to left field and later singled, collecting two RBIs in the process. Kevin Hurlbutt hit a home run to the wall in left field and also collected two RBIs. Kevin Oechsel had two solid doubles and an RBI. Mike Knopf had two singles and scored twice. Sean Leddee hit a perfectly executed single to right field with runners on base and collected an RBI for his efforts.

Kevin Suh walked twice and put himself in scoring position by stealing two bases. Jeff Tobias had a great game behind the plate, and fought his way out of a bases loaded jam in the sixth, allowing no runs to score.

Adam Overgaard started for the Dodgers and pitched five tremendous innings, baffling A’s hitters with a clever mix of fast ball and off speed pitches. He allowed only four hits while striking out five. Mike Knopf pitched a hard-throwing seventh for the save.

The A’s played error free baseball and showed good discipline at the plate. It was a well-played game by both teams with a lot of action and excitement for the fans. The coaching staffs for both teams can be very proud of their teams’ efforts. (Coach Knopf)

One inning of bad defensive plays and some timely hitting by the Dodgers was the difference in this closely contested game, four solid innings by the team’s starter and Kien Warren pitched two scoreless inning of relief, striking out four.

Brendan Zwaneveld’s hits, including a booming triple, and Brian Blumenthal, Kyle McDonald, Sean Mintie and Alex Rosen added base hits. Defensively, McDonald made diving plays in the infield, Mintie scooped out a couple of low throws at first, and Robert Schneider made a catch of Adam Overgaard’s drive to right. The team welcomed back Richie Maloof from the disabled list and look forward to big things from him. (Coach Gosselin)

Dodgers (Knopf) - 9 Yankees (Moe) - 7

In a game where the lead switched back and forth between the two teams four times, the Dodgers won a close game on six inning pitching from Michael Knopf, against whom the Yankees could muster only four hits, which included singles by Taylor Brink, and Chris Curtis, and a double by Johnny Moe.

Yankee starter Taylor Brink pitched well, and the Yankees’ defense, led by T Peterman (who had three great plays), center fielder Kevin Dalrymple and first baseman Joseph Cadiff, kept the Yankees under control. The difference in this game was the Dodgers’ outfield which made great catches on three successive deep fly balls. (Coach Moe)

In another close, and exciting contest, the Dodgers played solid defense for most of the game and had great timely hitting to beat an excellent Yankees team, 9-7. The Yankees made the most of three hits and several walks to manufacture their seven runs.

With regular pitcher Joseph Cadiff unable to go, Taylor Brink and Jamie Krasner, pitched well, sharing eight strikeouts between them. The Dodgers’ bats continued to produce, smacking 12 base hits and using heads up baserunning to help secure the win.

The Dodger offense was led by Adam Overgaard with two singles and a double, and two runs scored. Overgaard also sparkled with his glove, making two terrific plays at shortstop off his shoelaces, and another to throw out speedy Kevin Dalrymple on a close play at first.

Michael Knopf singled, and walked twice to get on base in three at bats, scoring all three times. Knopf also pitched all six innings, striking out nine Yankees, to pick up the win. Kevin Suh continued his hot hitting with a triple, double and single, scoring once and falling just short of hitting for the cycle.

Dependable first baseman Billy Platisa, singled and scored. Maxx Srinivasan, continuing to improve at the plate. He flexed his power and hit two to left center. Kevin Oechsel singled and played another flawless game defensively at first base. Jeff Tobias and Jamie Dick shared duties behind the plate, with each making outstanding catches, as well, in left field.

Kevin Suh, always a distraction on the bases. singled sharply twice, stole two bases, and came around to score once. He also made a nice catch in center field of a long drive. Sean Leddee, playing hard through the pain of an injured sore heel, hit a solid fly to center field that Yankees’ centerfielder Kevin Dalrymple caught to rob him of a base hit.

Graeme Rothe, and Derek Abedian, two of the best situation players in the league, roamed the field to keep Yankee runners at bay. Rothe also filled in nicely at first base in the fifth. It was a wonderful turnout for both teams and friends and both teams appreciated the great support. (Coach Knopf)

Washington Nationals (Kendall) - 14 Giants (Lee) - 13

The Nationals came from behind to win their sixth straight game on a walk off single by Jason Yost in the bottom of the seventh inning. Yost had another single to his day as well. Troy Marderosian had two doubles and scored three times and Cole Kendall had three hits with two walks. Wyatt had a double and Aidan Apel had two hits and scored the winning run. Brian McGuigan and Alex Bledsoe also added singles.

The Nationals’ defense overcame some early errors and stiffened the last three innings with nice outfield catches made by Will Guthr and Apel. (Coach Kendall)

The Giants started out strong with 11 runs in four innings. Rasheed Akbarut laid down a perfect bunt for an RBI and scored a run. He and Josh Anderson scored two runs each. Also scoring early were Alex Lee, Danny O’Leary, Jeff Barker, Joseph Lee and Nick Lupica.

Defensive highlights were Matt Faber’s heads up play, tagging the runner at third, Peter Chodas’ play at the plate, and Josh Anderson’s catch and throw home to hold the runner at third.

The Nationals caught up in the late innings, sparking a seventh inning rally. Gray took two bases on a dropped third strike and scored a run, Michael Lee hit a triple to center, and scored, and Chris Louk got a hit.

Even with their “never say die” attitude, they were unable to hold the Nationals who scored the tie breaking run in the bottom of the seventh inning to win, 14-13. (Coach Lee)

Red Sox (Borland) -16 Angels (Markowitz) - 3

The Red Sox came to play, defeating the Angels, 16-3. (Coach Markowitz)

The Red Sox held the Angels to three runs on three shut out innings by Michael McGlashan and three strong innings by Thor Blough. The Red Sox had 13 hits with Hunter Doty leading the way with three. Erik Borlund, Thor Blough and Michael McGlashan had two hits each. Ring, Jake Borlund, Paul Lee and Jack Paton each had one hit. (Coach Borlund)

A’s (Gosselin) - 5 Orioles (Hanson) - 4

In a hard fought game, in which the Orioles led most of the time, the A’s surged forward in the bottom of the seventh. Great pitching by Sam Baldwin and relievers Brendan Shoemake and Chris Longo led the Orioles’ defense.

A leaping catch and tag by Josh Hanson in the fifth inning and two exciting pickles rounded out the defense. Two triples were hit by Dodge Williams and Brendan Shoemake and there were singles by Alex Reed, Sam Baldwin, Chris Bache and Sam Taylor. In spite of the loss, the Orioles celebrated what they felt was game of the season to date. (Coach Hanson)

The A’s rallied in the bottom of the seventh to win, scoring two runs on Brendan Zwaneveld’s bases-loaded, game-winning single.

There was great pitching from John Rodli and Kien Warren, who each pitched three strong innings and combined for nine strikeouts, and Sean Mintie, who pitched out of trouble in the seventh.

Alex Rosen had two hits and two RBI, Zane Schwartz had a single and Richie Maloof and Kyle McDonald got key walks in the seventh and scored the tying and winning runs.

The team played with Brian Blumenthal and Kyle Gosselin making several nice plays up the middle, and Sean Fitzpatrick catching several tough pitches the plate. (Coach Gosselin)

Bronco Division

Dodgers (Georgino) - 9 Angels (Cokey) - 8

The Dodgers came roaring back from a 6-0 deficit when Bennett Sorensen with two outs and two strikes on him, muscled a clean single to right to drive in the winning run.

The Dodger tough guy award goes to Leo Higley (two hits) who was hit squarely on the forehead by a line shot but insisted on staying in the game and scored the winning run.

Zane Bodmer ripped another triple off the left field fence. Coleman Monroe ( two hits) added to the offense, reaching base three times. Tommy B was superb at catcher, using his strong arm to hold runners and pitched two solid innings. Christian Terrile, Clayton Weirick and Eri played good defense.

Derek Georgino ( two hits two RBIs) came into pitch in the fifth when Leo Higley was hit with two on and struck out the side. He earned the win with six strikeouts in two innings. (Coach Georgino)

After totally dominating the Dodgers in the first three innings, leading 6-0 behind another superb performance by Mitch Russell (seven strikeouts, no hits, no runs), the Angels’ defense gave up seven unearned runs with five errors.

However, even with the defensive lapses, the Angels had a chance to pull the game out.

Trailing 7-6, Trevor Roszkos delivered a clutch two-run single to give the Angels the lead, but a couple unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth closed out the game. Offensive standouts Mitchell Page had two singles and two RBI, Trevor Roszkos continued swinging the bat well with two RBI.

George Jacobs, in his first game off the disabled list, hit the ball hard three times, collecting one single. Mitch Russell had the fans screaming when he stole home with a face first dive in the third inning. The Angels hope to bounce back defensively. (Coach Gokey)

Mete (Singelyn) - 9 Red Sox (Gartside) - 4

The Red Sox fought hard before falling to the Mets, 9-4. Randy Gartside started the game with a home run, and Roy Yu and added RBI hits. Jake Johnson made a nice stab of a hard grounder and Bryce Hopkins threw out a runner trying to score. Hopkins’ two hits helped the offense. (Coach Gartside)

Nationals (Anderson) -10 Mets (Singelyn) - 3

Patrick Saucedo was key in keeping the Mets from scoring. Patrick made a superb play fielding the ball and throwing to first baseman Scott Helbing to end the first inning leaving the Mets scoreless. Helbing also made a great catch in center field in the fifth.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Nationals executed an awesome pick off. Pitcher Jack Anderson threw the ball down to first baseman Tyler Zsebik, who threw to Patrick at second and caught the runner in a pickle. Patrick ran the runner back and tagged him for the out.

Saucedo, Clayton Herrmann, and Anderson all hit solid doubles. Kyle Vand der Linde, Helbing, Jang Lirn, and Zsebik hits helped rack up 10 runs for the Nationals. (Coach Anderson)

Yankees (CioffI) - 4 Astros (Higa) - 3

A tight game where pitching predominated. The Yankees pitched a no hitter game with John Hayes going three innings and Avery Schwartz going four innings. The Yankees needed only three hits to score four runs, and Cole Ramseyer had an excellent game with four RBIs, three of which came off his ozone layer three-run home run in the second inning. Schwartz batted .1000 with 2 walks.

Patrick Yu drove in the fourth run with two smart at-bats. Also getting on base were John Hayes, Ryan Schiller, and JB Lovelace. Although the Yanks were sloppy in the fourth with three errors, a tight defense predominated for six innings.

Schiller caught an excellent seven innings with a great catch in the first, Kawamura played smart at second, Toomarian was sharp at first and Nate Eisenberg did a great job at third, out. Ramseyer also had a running catch at left field to make the second out of the top of the seventh.

As a pitcher, Hayes got six strikeouts innings, getting three consecutive in the second inning. Schwartz got six in four innings, only throwing seven pitches in the 6th inning. (Coach Cioffi)

The Astros fought back from a four run deficit only to come up one run short in a 4-3 loss to the Yankees. Leading the comeback was Halpenny, Patrick Xu and Justin Higa who each scored a run. Chase Levra had a hit and a RBI.

Justin Higa pitched two scoreless inning with the help of a double play that happened on a line drive back to Justin who then doubled off the runner at second. (Coach Higa)

Dodgers (Georgino) - 11 Cubs (Powers) - 1O

The Cubs and Dodgers battled hard through seven innings in a well played game by both sides. The Cubs got down. Chad Powers went 4-for-4 with six RBI and Shubham Surani scored three times and hit a triple in the third inning. The pitching staff went four strong innings. Key defensive plays were made by Andrew McAdams, Buck Miller and Shubham.

The Dodgers showed character in holding off a tenacious Cubs team in a game that went down to the wire. Weirick ( one hit )came through by pitching four strong innings for the Dodgers. Coleman Monroe then took over and battled the Cubs, coming on strong in the final inning.

Erick Lankey added three key singles and three RBI. Christian Terrile got a hit. Derek Georgino, Bennett Sorensen, Zane Bodmer, Leo Higley and Tommy Bartholetti all added key hits. (Coach Georgino)

Orioles (Swanson) - 4 Nationals (Anderson) - 3

The Orioles played a very tough Nationals team with the deciding run coming late in the bottom of the seventh inning. Matt Faber got off to an early start with a three-run homer in the bottom of the second inning to continue his outstanding hitting contributions.

Ryan McAleenan pitched four terrific innings, yielding only one hit and holding the Nationals scoreless to that point. The Orioles sent in reliever Andrew Burger for the following three innings with the Nationals battling back with three runs to tie-up the game.

Stephen Hernandez led off the seventh inning with the game tied at 3-3 with a stand-up triple. Andrew Burger went two for three and knocked in Hernandez for the winning score. Will Swanson and Johnny Louk both had great at-bats, getting on base twice during the game. (Coach Swanson)

The Nationals gave it their best in a battle down to the last inning of the game. The National’s bats came alive in the fifth inning Van der Linde hit a solid double. Sam Saucedo blasted a home run out over center to drive in two runs. Jack Anderson smacked a double and teammate Clayton Herrmann sent another ball flying into right field for a double to bring Anderson home to tie the game. Anderson did a great job in the field as well.

Brendan Daly played well at first. Alden Sayre made a spectacular catch in right field. Catcher and shortstop Sam Saucedo combined their talents for a sweet play at home to tag the runner out. Van der Linde and Anderson also did great jobs on the mound pitching. (Coach Anderson)

Orioles (Swanson) - 9 Dodgers (Georgino) – 8

The Orioles began inter-league play, outlasting the hard hitting Dodgers, 9-8. The O’s battled back from an 8-2 deficit. Stephen Hernandez and Will Swanson singled. Andrew Burger then tripled them home. Ryan McAleenan singled in Burger and then stole second base. Jones singled and later scored, all in the third inning.

McAleenan reached the Paradise Canyon Elementary School asphalt for the first time this year with Johnny Louk continued the fifth inning rally with a walk. Louk and Matthew Krugler would then round out the Oriole scoring. McAleenan picked up the win setting down the final six Dodger batters in order. (Coach Swanson)

The Dodgers faced the strong Orioles in a well played nonconference game and carried a 8-2 lead into the fifth but just couldn’t hold it.

Tommy Bartholetti (two singles) and Derek Georgino (double and single) had a stellar game offensively and defensively getting good pitching. Both made diving catches on the field and Bartholetti threw out a runner stealing, Georgino took the mound with the bases loaded and closed it with a strikeout. He went on to pitch four excellent innings.

Coleman Monroe smashed a big triple and single. Clayton Weirick blasted a huge home run to the asphalt and pitched a scoreless sixth inning. (Coach Georgino)

The Red Sox got their first win by forfeit, although the teams played a practice game. Sean Moriarity had a sharp single and had a double to lead the hitting. Brendan Greene led the defense by shagging a long fly to left center. (Coach Gartside)

Yankees (Cioffi) - 14 Cubs (Powers) - 12

. The Yankees were winning 11-1 going into the fifth inning, when the Cubs staged a come-back bringing the tying run to the plate before the Yankees closed the door in the top of the seventh with Avery Schwartz getting two strikeouts to retire the Cubs.

Pitching for the Yanks was John Hayes, going four innings, getting five strikeouts and seeing only four batters each in the second and, third and fourth innings. All Yankees got on base with Nate Eisenberg getting a game ball, batting .1000 with two walks. JB Lovelace hit a two RBI double in the second inning.

Ryan Kawamura and Ryan Schiller were twins at the plate as both getting doubles and singles with Schiller also cathcing four big innings. Hayes got two RBI with one hit. Austin Kenwood got on base, got an RBI and scored. Patrick Patao got on base and scored and also made contact at each at bat. James Toomarian scored in the second. Schwartz had three assists and one catch at shortstop and threw out a runner. (Coach Cioffl)

The Cardinals are off to an 0-5 start, but some good things are starting to happen. Andrew Bartine went 4-for-4 and Peter Gilmore hit a triple, double and a single. Alden Geller had two hits and Tim Brown, Jake Rubendall and Zach George each got a single. (Coach Herzer)

Nationals (Anderson) - 9 Padres (Hanson) - 5

It was all about the hitting for the Nationals in their game against the Padres. Standout hitter Tyler Zsebik smashed a home run followed by a hard hit triple by Scott Helbing. Clayton Herrmann, Jack Anderson, Kyle Van der Linde, Brendan Daly, Jang Lim and Helbing all scored for the Nationals.

In the Field, Herrmann snagged three line drives at short. The Saucedo brothers each caught a fly. Jang Lim made a great play fielding the ball at second to make the out at first. Pitcher Zsebik executed a fantastic pick off by throwing the ball to shortstop Herrmann who threw down to third baseman Van der Linde to tag the base stealer out. Sam Saucedo performed on the mound, striking out six of the seven batters he faced in the fourth and fifth innings. (Coach Anderson)

Junior Division”

California Chicks (Musso) - 8 Almost Burnt Marshmallows (Yoon) -7

The California Chicks held off a courageous Marshmallow rally to win 8-7. Annette Persson ignited a seven-run third inning by driving in two runs. Persson also had an unassisted out at thrd base to end the inning with the bases loaded. A Musso fielded a grounder at second base and made a nice throw to first for an out. Brenna Gay pitched two solid innings.

Finally, Natalie Schulz had a game for the Ages - two base hits, caught a pop fly to end one inning, gave up one run. Pitching in the last inning, with two out, a runner on third, and the Chicks clinging to a one-run lead, Schulz fielded a hard hit grounder, threw the ball across the infield to an outstretched Maddy “Mo” Mackenzie at first, just barely beating the runner to first for the game winning out. Angels (Markowitz) - 18 Sparks (Johnson) - 10

The Sparks ran into a very game Angels’ squad that pounded the ball from start to finish. Madison Johnson made two dazzling plays at third base. McKenzie Dodge, Amanda Johnson, Leanis Stepanian, Jessica Ogden, and Courtney Grande had base hits. (Coach Johnson)

The Angels’ bats were on fire in an 18-10 victory over the Sparks. Maddy Fisher, Niamh James, Dana Budzyn, Aubri Thompson and Natalie Markowitz each had multiple hits in the game. Also chipping in hits were India Williams and Sarah Bartine. Laurel Johnson stole two bases and scored two runs.

On defense, Kathryn Zwingli made a nice stop at third- The Angels also got good pitching from Niamh James and Maddy Fisher. (Coach Markowitz)

Wahine Surfers (Monroe) - 5 Green Gecko Girls (Galper) -4

The Wahine Surfers squeaked out a 5-4 victory against a very talented Triple G team. Caroline Kavich battled behind the plate. Leah Maherer, Sam Shackel and Kailen King all got on base and scored for the Wahine Surfers. With the bases loaded, Monroe tied the game with a single in the final inning. Kelsey Drange came up to bat and crushed a double to centerfield to win the game.(Coach Monroe)

Time was not on the Geckos’ side in a hard fought game that had the Geckos leading most of the way Julia Blanco pitched a one-two-three fifth inning that ended three minutes before the hour and a half deadline with the Geckos leading a close game. The teams played a sixth inning and the Surfers came back to win, 5-4.

The game was highlighted by some strong pitching by Madelyn Merchant, Galper and Julia Blanco who held the offensively minded Surfers to only five runs in six innings. There was also some great defense on both sides including a one handed catch of a foul ball by Sarah Borland, a tag at home plate on a throw by Allison Thornton and a great pickup of a ball that ricocheted on the pitcher by Rachel Devine.

Almost Burnt Marshinallows (Yoon) -16 Purple Pirates (Swanson) - 4

The Purple Pirates were outgunned 16-4 by the talented A.B.M.s at Oak Grove. Tracey Andrews hit a single in the second, driving in Lauren Streeter. Andrews later scored on a single by Marisa Wang. Danielle Miller rounded out the scoring with a two-run homer in the third with Emily Swanson aboard. (Coach Swanson)

California Chicks (Musso) - 9 Sparks (Johnson) - 8

The California Chicks survived another nail-biter against the comeback-minded Sparks, 9 - 8. On defense, Katie Benson reacted at shortstop to somehow snag a missile fired from one of the Sparks’ hitter, Blake Dietrich fielded a ball in left field and alertly stopped a runner trying to advance to third. The defensive play of the game was a 4 - 3 - 2 double play ( in the top half of the last inning).(Coach Musso)

The Sparks dropped their first one-run decision of the season to a solid California Chicks team, 9-8. Anais Stepanian played behind the plate, making great play after great play. Jessica Ogden was robbed of a hit by a great defensive play. The Sparks battled back in the last inning to tie the score before going down, 9-8. (Coach Johnson)

Green Gecko Girls (Galper) -10 Purple Pirates (Swanson) - 5

The Geckos really put it together in a 10-5 victory against a very strong Purple Pirate team, as they combined strong outstanding fielding and timely hitting. Julia Blanco again lead the way on the pitching side by hurling three strong innings.

On a series on great plays, including a one handed grab by Sarah Borland on a fly ball to left field, a running catch by Galper in left center, a catch of a pop up and then double play by Madelyn Merchant and a strong throw by Chelsea Johnson to Sarah Borland to throw out a runner trying to steal third base.

On offense, Rachel Devine and Daisy Beckner each scored two runs. (Coach Galper)

Kelly Jacobs opened up the scoring for the Purple Pirates when she was driven in by Danielle Miller’s long single. The Pirates scored in the second after Jessica Davidson, Lauren Streeter, Tracey Andrews and Maddy McCollum all reached base in consecutive at bats and came around to score.

The Pirates also had several well hit balls that weren’t able to get through the tough Green Geckos’ defense. Emily Swanson and Kelly Jacobs pitched well for the Pirates, recording six strikeouts between them. (Coach Swanson)

Angels (Markowitz) - 8 Wahine Surfers (Monroe) - 8

In a titanic battle, the Angels ended in an 8-8 tie against the Wahine Surfers. The Angels received excellent pitching from Niamh James with Maddy Fisher and Natalie Markowitz solid in relief. The pitchers were aided by a number of outstanding defensive plays as the team was able to get a Wahine Surfer in a pickle at third with Emily Fisher receiving the throw and making the tag.

The play of the day, and perhaps the year, came with the bases loaded and no outs. India Williams tracked a well hit ball to right field and made a spectacular catch. After catching the ball, Williams smartly threw to Dana Budzyn at first for a force out against a retreating runner for the second out and fired the ball to Niamh James to catch another Wahine Surfer at second base to complete a triple play.

In the final inning with the game on the line, Maddy Fisher tracked down another well hit fly ball for a putout. On offense, the Angels picked up multiple hits from Niamh James. Laurel Johnson and Sarah Bartine (two RBI) also chipped in hits. (Coach Markowitz)

The Wahine Surfers battled against a very talented Angels team. The Angels defense was spectacular. Highlights for the Surfers include putouts by Camille Betance to an outstretched Kelsey Drange at first base. Player of the game was rookie Lexi Lorenz for making a great defensive play to save a home run. Drange, Lynn Gilmour, Annie Monroe and Betance all had handled a hard hit ball for an out. Hats off to the Angels for multiple jaw dropping defensive plays. (Coach Monroe)

The White Sox struggled to keep up with the fast paced Red Sox. Our pitching was struggling along with our bats. The (Coach Williams)

The game was very close in the beginning. The Dodger squeaked out a victory with a balanced hitting attack. Eric Suarez had three hits and Justin Cohen had two. The Angels and Dodgers battled out a hard fought game that was played to completion in a crisp one hour and 45 minutes. The fine hitting of the Dodgers, coupled with a few defensive lapses by the Angels, made the difference. David Bywater, Mich Gosselin and Clay Smith all pitched well for the Angels and combined for 11 strikeouts. Yankees (Selsor) - 8 White Sox (Williams) - 7

In a game that started out with Yankees’ getting the upper hand, the White Sox gave them all they could handle in the fourth and sixth innings to tie the game.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Yankees’ Johnny Selsor hit a long fly ball to left that dropped and ultimately lead to the winning run. The credit to holding the Yankees down goes to our pitching staff with Steven Szot getting the start and Dillan Williams pitching two straight innings of hitless ball.

Outstanding offensive production from Matt Finkelberg an two-RBI double. Andy Ashford got onboard all three times and did a very good job stealing at will on the bases. Overall, the team got 12 walks and seven hits, a big improvement from the previous games. Defensively, Don Pontrelli and Collin Ramani kept the Yankees close to the bag. Infielders Ramani and Chris Knapp also made put outs.

The White Sox lost the game, but it was a very good game, exciting to watch, and each team should be happy with their play.

The bats were silent for the Angels in this loss to the Giants. There were some bright spots pitching wise though, as George Ryan Gosselin threw three shutout innings and combined with Michael Finney, Clay Smith and David Bywater to strike out 10. Timely hitting and superb defense led to a 9-2 victory for the Red Sox. Kevin DePriest blasted two doubles and Justin Hopkin Hoppe had run-scoring singles. Austin Gartside, Jeff Lee and Justin Hopkins pulled off a one-three-two double play and Henry Rowe caught several flies in left field, one an over-the-shoulder beauty.

Ryan Hobart also contributed to the defense with a catch of a fly to left center and helped the offense by driving in two runs. Grant Owen had a couple of hits and three quality innings of pitching. (Coach Lee)

Yankees (Schaedel) -16 White Sox (Canyon) - 8

Joey Robertson gunned down his third runner of the season. It is the reckless runner who attempts to steal on Robertson. He also did well at the plate with two walks, a single, a double and a triple. Reed Buck earned the game ball for his game-clinching double to center. He was devastating, going 4-for-4 with four RBI and scored four times. Alex Vaughn scored four times as well.

JP Schaedel started the Yankees’ scoring attack with a first-inning drive to left field, and he tripled later in the game. Kevin House had with two hits, including an emphatic blast to center that reached the blacktop for a ground rule double. Alex Orloff had a hit to center and walked three times.

Dan Stoffel reached base and scored. Ethan Ralphs reached base three times and also made a catch in center field to rob a White Sox player of extra bases. Schaedel turned an unassisted double play at first base and made two putouts.

On the mound, the Yankees enjoyed solid pitching from House, Schaedel and Orloff, each of whom struck out three batters. Overall, a fine team effort earned the Yankees a well-deserved win over a talented team. (Coach Schaedel)

Pitching was the name of this game as both teams showed solid pitching. The Angels pitched Kyle Cheung, Matthew Gilmour and Johnny Brandt who combined to strikeout 13. Cheung and Brandt recording five strikeouts a piece while Gilmour made a great pitching debut.

The offense woke up late as it was limited to only one run through the first four innings, the Angels rallied for five in the bottom of the fifth. Ritchie Co and Brandt each had doubles. James Cornwall had a timely single that drove in two runs. Solid defense was led by Jason Helbing. (Coach Cheung)

The Dodgers lost another close one, 6-2, to the Angels. For the second time in two games, the Dodgers held the lead late in the game only to have the other team win it in its last at bat.

Game highlights include Colin Kreditor’s clutch RBI single in the fourth inning to help the Dodgers go up, 2-1. Grant Haxton and Clayton Massimino also contributed with hits. The Pirates played an outstanding A’s team. The Pirates battled back in the fourth inning, scoring four and taking a 4-1 lead, but just as quickly, the A’s scored five in the fifth and another three in the sixth. The Pirates had a chance to tie in the sixth inning but came up a little short with two runners on base.

. Great pitching from Jax Jacinto and Collin Morikawa held the A’s to one run through several innings. Prescott (single) earned the game ball for his key hit in the fourth. Jacinto (double), Morikawa (single), and Austin Muller (single) had hits. Austin Ruiz and Matt Olson played well behind the plate. Alex Khlasa had two solid defensive plays at third base. The A’s and Pirates pitchers dueled during the opening four innings with the Pirates taking a 4 - 1 lead in the bottom of the fourth. The offense came alive in the final two innings with key hits by Jacob Carter, who had two RBI’s, Christian Heer who belted a triple line drive for two RBI and Charlie DePew who started the final inning rally with a single.

Joey Robertson caught another great game, nailing his fourth base runner of the season trying to steal second. Ethan Ralphs contributed fantastic play in center field. Alex Orloff earned the game ball for two more big hits and solid play in left field. JP Schaedel and Ralphs led the team with three hits apiece while Francisco Durazo and Robertson added hits to the Yankees’ attack.

Ten runs is pretty good for Cheung’s Angels who had their hitting shoes on, pounding a succession of Yankees’ pitchers who showed good control. Alex Vaughn played quality shortstop and Francisco made a nice play at second base. (Coach Schaedel)

The A’s and White Sox’s managed only one run over the first four innings and stranded a total of 14 runners on base between them. Anderson knocked in the only run for the A’s. Ryan Newquist started the A’s fifth inning rally with a double, Harley Drange walked, Christian Heer singled to drive in two runs, and Tom Phillips hit a stand-up triple adding an RBI.

Defensively, it was Newquist’s regular season debut. He pitched two shutout innings, striking out four. Jacob Carter made a diving catch on a line drive at pitcher. In this slugfest of a game, all of the Red Sox’s’ players hit and scored. Paul Broberg, Christopher Henry, Graham Massimino and Jonathan Stewart scored three runs. The hits included triples by Sean Kawamura, Graham Massimino and Stewart.

Blake Cornell had a home run and a triple to lead the Orioles’ offensive attack. Hunter Hutchens had two hits and drove in a run. Riley Owen who had two hits and made a great catch in center field to spur on the Orioles defense.

Jacob Liss had two hits with C. Dohi, and Douglas Paine having one hit each. Sean Estes, Tom Raney and Jack Jones contributed to the team. Jack Webster, Chris Larsen and Blake Cornell made great defensive plays for the Orioles. (Coach Hutchens)

The Astros prevailed over the Orioles in a well played game, 9-4. The Astros’ offense was highlighted by George Orloff who hit a triple, and Davis Browning who went 4-for-4 including a homer and a double. The Astros showed good defense in holding down the Orioles, whose offense was highlighted by Blake Cornell who hit a home run and good defense. Angels (Kim) -17 Cardinals (Badaruddin) -11

Angels had a tough game against the hard hitting Cardinals and won, 17-11. The Angels had good start with great defensive plays, including a stunning double play at the first base followed by Hunter Dorr’s great catch at the left field fence which kept the hard hitting Cardinals from scoring. Brandon Kenney also made great defensive play from second base.

The Angels’ offense managed to score in double digits again. Sam Geller hit two doubles and two triples, David Yoon hit four singles, Jordan Lee hit two doubles and a single and Jackson Mabray hit three singles.

Jonathan Lee augmented exemplary play at catcher with a lead off home run and perfection at the plate, going 3-for-3 and earning the game ball in a contest that featured several outstanding performances.

Two other players, Tex Hulsey and Fastball Grayson, were also perfect at the plate on the game. And consider the power of this team: Fastball, Jonathan the Destroyer Lee, Lightning Choi and Flame Herron all launched home runs.

Dash Badaruddin went 2-for-3 while performing in the pitcher position and in the outfield. Papi King gave us another gritty performance behind the plate, knocked out for an inning after getting hit in the arm. Rocket Belcher hit the ball hard. Slugger Garg played well at third, A.K. In a very tough match-up, the Giants slipped past the Cubs, 11-10, John Monroe led the Giants’ offense with four hits Benjamin Spencer and Harrison Hayes each had three-run homers and four RBI on the day. Sam Geller chipped in a single, a home run and two RBI, and Robb Lovelace added two singles and scored three runs. The team played solid defense and is getting better everyday. The Cardinal offense exploded in the first inning with consecutive singles by Papi, Tex, Ben-10, A.K., and Slugger. The offense kept up the pressure in the second with another five-run explosion. The offensive star of another strong game for the Cubs was Dash, who was awarded the game ball after a perfect 2-for-2 performance, with two doubles and two runs scored.

Another big star was the Cardinals’ defense which has come a long way: Flame and Rocket (also two-for- two at the plate) really demonstrated solid play and the Destroyer stood his ground on two plays at home. The team is headed in the right direction, defensively. Hot Dog did his best and Lightning flawlessly fielded several hits to the outfield with quick throws to limit the rampant base-running of a very aggressive team. (Coach Badaruddin)

The Battling Bears gave the Dirt Devils a battle, but thanks to great pitching by Caroline Kenney (no runs allowed in first inning) the Dirt Devils were able to keep the Bear Batters in check.

Sarah Hughes did a great pick up on third base to stop a run from coming in. Hannah Martinez is the team’s star catcher. As for batting, the Dirt Devils were terrific. Every Dirt Devil played at one point. Either a base hit or an RBI was hit. Madeline Weirick knocked in three runs. Other RBI hitters included Caroline Kenney. There were also awesome base hits by Amber Suk, Maddie Preiss, Missy Horner and Sarah Hughes. (Coach Preiss)

La Cañada Books and Toys’ Battling Bears were no match for the tough pitching they faced. Although the girls were back from vacation, their bats were still on spring break. Eight girls struck out against tough pitching by Caroline Kenney and Missy Horner.

On a positive note, the pitching was strong. Loren Shin started the game, Kellyn O’Leary came in for middle relief, and Kara Thompson was the closer. Kristen and Nicole Stevens each scored runs. Kara, Nicole and Shayna Goldstein each walked.

Kellyn, Kara and Kristen each had sharp hits had an awesome play in the field, almost getting a runner at first on a great throw. (Coach O’Leary)

The Bad News Behrs played an outstanding defensive game, earning a 2-1 victory over a very solid team. Jennifer Fix allowed only one run over four innings of work. The Behrs played great defense highlighted by key plays by Deville, Fix, Powers, who might have saved the game by chasing down a hard hit ball into left field and throwing it in to the pitcher.

The Gillespie girls’ bats were working today. All of the girls contributed to this win, including two girls playing up from Junior and Courtney, Olivia Warner, Lauren O’Leary, Emily Selsor, Serra Brenner, Kendall Millard, Lauren Loadvine, Kelsey, and Co singled or walked or both and scored. Ali Preiss caught and took one for the team, getting hit by a pitch. Lauren O’Leary and Kenda also had several strikeouts in five innings. (Coach Warner)

For the Blue Crew, Lauren Cox threw a six inning no-hitter, striking out 13 and walking two. Stephanie Bathke took the mound for Valencia and delivered quite a performance herself, striking out eight and walking only two.

There were timely hits by Claire Hilsen and Alexandra Brown. Trailing 4-2 in the bottom of the sixth, a walk by Shelby Comstock and a single stage for a three-run Homer by Cox to end the game, 5-4. (Coach Cox)

After leading 4-2 going into the bottom of the sixth inning, the Verizon Wild Things lost a heartbreaker 5-4 to the undefeated Blue Crew on a walk-off three-run home run by Lauren Cox.

The Wild Things played great defense with hard hit line drives caught by Kambe, Kyler Harvey and Stephanie Bathke. Kate Brown was excellent behind the plate combining with Lauren Bruerto to pick off a runner trying to steal third base. Emily Valencia played error free ball at first base. Carlee Kreisel and Amy Young had the tough job of covering the outfield with only two players and did a great job. Offensively, Valencia, Lauren Bruer, and Kyler Harvey made great catches and Kate Brown laid down a picture perfect bunt leading to her scoring. Well timed hits by Andie Evans, Ashley Fejtek, Ana Dewar, Shelby Comstock and Claire Hilsen led the charge to provide Blue Crew with the win. A perfectly laid bunt by Lauren Schirmer and a two-RBI single by Lauren Cox put the game out of reach again the bomb team.

Another solid night on the mound for Cox, giving up just two hits and no walks, while striking out 10. Solid base running by Robbins and an outstanding job behind the plate by Alexandra Brown. (Coach Cox)

The Green Apple Snapple played a complete game and a game winning hit from Catherine Horner resulted in an exciting 6-5 win. the defense was led by a great catch in center field by Kara Lankey and a throw from Desi Dahlson to Kelly Trueblood, who made a long relay to the pitcher who threw a strike to home, where Amanda Wojciechowski tagged out the sliding Katie Clancy . Kelly Stewart played solid shortstop and scored the winning run and Julia Jagels had the key at bat to ignite the offense. (Coach Trueblood)

The Purple Strykers played an intense game against an equally intense opponent and were outlasted in the final inning. Solid hitting by Alicia Dewel, Rebecca Stoker and Marisa Wang (playing-up) kept the game close. Katie Clancy tripled and single, Sarah Q singles and Kelly Wang put down a great bunt for a single to lead off the game. In the end, the pitching of Catherine Horner and the opponent’s offense won the game for them. (Coach Ferri)

Valencia-Bathke Wild Things (Valencia) - 11 Patriot Babes (Eaton) - 2

The Verizon Wild Things put together a complete team effort to beat the Patriot Babes, 11-2. The Wild Things were lead offensively by Bruer and Lauren Kambe, each with three singles and runs scored, and Stephanie Bathke who hit a three-run homerun, Kyler Harvey and Emily Valencia also had multiple hits and scored runs. Kate Brown hit a double and scored three runs.

Outfield play by Carle Young, Payton Parker, and Harvey prevented extra bases off deep hits by the Patriot Babes. Bathke on the mound and Brown behind the plate proved to be a tough combination allowing only two runs and catching one runner trying to steal horn at second. This game was a lot closer than the score. With four Gillespie Girls on the “injured” or “could not play” list, three junior girls replaced them: Madelyn Merchant, Kendall Sandoval and Chelsea Johnson. All three girls did great, each hitting the ball and making plays.

The Gillespie Girls got excellent pitching from Lauren O’Leary and Olivia Warner. Lauren Loadvine made a great play throwing from third. Ali Preiss, playing catcher, threw her mask off and threw out a runner at first. Serra Brenner made a great play to first. Warner and Emily Selsor turned in another great game at second and first, respectively. The win was a total team (Coach Warner)

The Blasters scored two runs in the first inning and three runs in the fourth, but team Valencia’s Stephanie Bathke shut them down with her stellar pitching performance.

Highlights for the Blasters were a booming triple by Shirley Drange, singles by Erica Tavara, Koko Tavara, and a solid single by junior call up Noelle Smith off Bathke. The Purple Strykers put in a solid effort. Katie Clancy pitched a one-hitter, hit two home runs and collected five RBIs. Sarah Olson had two unassisted put-outs. The team had three girls move up from the Junior League. Marisa Wang, Maddy Fisher and Natalie Markowitz played solid defense and were definitely helpful at the plate, scoring three of the team’s nine runs.

Stephanie Ferri was solid behind the plate as she was hit by a pitch and walked. Kelly Wang was hit by a pitch, walked and laid down a great bunt for a hit and scored twice. Kristen was solid at second and third base and Rebecca Stoker played solid defense and stole second. (Coach Ferri)

A tremendous display of offense coupled with a no-hit pitching performance highlighted a 16-1 Pacific West Blue Crew victory.

Alexandra Brown (3-for-3, three runs scored), Claire Hjlsen (2-for-3, three RBI), Ashley Fejtek, Ana Dewar, Shelby Comstock, Andie Evans and play-up player Kelsey Orange all added singles to score, A bases loaded triple put the final runs on the board to end the game. Ana Dewar made a sensational catch of a mile high pop up to dash the hopes of the Babes. Not expected to play due to injury, Cox threw a no-hitter, striking out 10 and walking two over four innings. Los Gringos Locos staged another exciting last inning comeback highlighted by Kelly Barnes’ perfect bunt which caused Kate Cullen to score the winning run from third. Cullen was the hitting star of the game, going 3-for-3 at the plate with all singles on the fly.

Chelsea Weeks also contributed a single, a double and a walk and continued her stellar defense at second base. Courtney McCutchan had five unassisted putouts at first base. Robin Jamison pitched one of her strongest games, striking out 10 La Crescenta hitters. (Coach Goldberg)

It was a battle against James Sierra Madre but it all came down to flawless fielding and fantastic hitting by the teams. Great plays were turned in by Shannon Streeter and Paige Parker in the outfield. Emily Villalpando had a triple with the bases loaded and Carolyn Hotchkin continued her streak with a satellite smashing shot to center field for a double.

Jelena Tasic, Meredith MacDougall were also hot at the plate and Sofia Portantino had a bases loaded triple scoring three more runs. She iced the cake with two outs, when she knocked in the winning run from third base for a walk-off single to win by one run. (Coach Tasic)

Los Gringos Locos broke out of a bit of a hitting slump in a big way, leading to a season-high nine runs. Virtually the entire lineup performed at the plate, highlighted by multi-hit efforts from Katie Goldberg (three hits), Kate Cullen (two hits), Robin Jamison (two hits), Chelsea Meeks Hansen (two hits).
