After falling behind, 4-0, in the top of the first inning, San Gabriel Valley stormed back with eight runs in the bottom of the frame to beat Arroyo Seco, 8-5, in a Babe Ruth 16-year-old Tournament first round game last Saturday at Arcadia High.

Following singles by Chris Sember and Kyle Wong, Ramiro Carreon doubled to give Arroyo Seco a 2-0 lead. Austin Heyworth then doubled Carreon in to score to up the score to 3-0. Heyworth eventually scored on a wild pitch to give Arroyo Seco a 4-0 advantage.

SGV’s eight-run outburst was highlighted by Matt Page and Angel Marti who both scored a run and batted in two apiece in the inning.

Arroyo Seco starter Carreon lasted only one-third of an inning. He was replaced by Chris Provenzano who blanked SGV for the remaining five-and-two-thirds innings.

David Arredondo, who started for SGV, gave up five runs in four innings. Chris Torres relieved him in the fifth and hurled three scoreless innings to earn a save.

Arroyo Seco’s Sember had a game-high three hits. Teammates Mike Dean, Nick Gentilli and Ryan Doeppel added two hit each.

Despite scoring eight runs, no SGV player had a multiple hit game.

In an earlier contest, North San Gabriel Valley, behind a strong pitching performance by Colby Gurney, topped La Crescenta, 4-1.

Gurney allowed just two hits and struck out five. He had a no-hitter through five innings before La Crescenta got to him.
