Film Review:You’re Never Too Old for Romance at ‘The Boynton Beach Club’

Anyone who loved HBO’s “Sex and the City” should see this film. “The Boynton Beach Club” is like a “Sex and the City” movie, only instead of Manhattan, it is a seniors club in Florida, and instead of Cosmopolitans, there are Early Bird Specials.

The story follows four widows and widowers who get back into the dating game after losing their spouse. Lois (Dyan Cannon) is a widow and the Carrie Bradshaw-like character. She meets Donald (Michael Nouri) while lunching with her three gal pals. Donald and Lois become romantically linked and enter an on-again, off-again relationship.

Her best friend is Marilyn (Brenda Vaccaro). Marilyn lost her husband in the opening scene and Lois encourages her to re-enter the dating world. The girls are friends with Harry (Joseph Bologna), who is a widower, but now quite the ladies man. He helps his best friend, Jack, (Len Cariou) learn to woo Sandy (Sally Kellerman), who he met at a bereavement club soiree. This leads to another on-again, off-again relationship. All of these events culminate at a New Year’s Eve dance, where all the couples celebrate the holiday and their new love.

This movie is great. It has romance, comedy and an appeal to adult audiences, including young adults. It played to sold out showings in Florida and is now making its debut over on the West Coast. It is in limited release, and theaters are listed on the film’s Web site at www.boyntonbeachclubthemovie.com. This film is not to be missed. As previously mentioned, any “Sex and the City” fan will love this film by Susan Seidelman, the director of several episodes of the HBO series.

This film is not rated, but is great for anyone 17 and up due to nudity and adult content. Starring Dyan Cannon, Joseph Bologna, Brenda Vaccaro and Len Cariou, I give this movie five out of five stars.
