Five Glendale Community College science students interning at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) will present research papers at the Southern California Conference for Undergraduate Research (SCCUR) to be held Saturday, Nov. 18 at Occidental College.
The students are Shirley Mims, Jessica Lotozinski, George Hernandez, Jessica Soler and Julia Torres. All are in the Student Independent Research Intern (SIRI) program and are the only community college students represented in the sciences at the conference.
SIRI is GCC’s internship agreement with JPL that gives outstanding students a chance to work with researchers in an unpaid capacity for one semester.
The innovative program began in 2003 and was developed by Richard Alvidrez and Dr. Ralph Kahn of JPL to introduce college students to science research.
Students work independently and alongside research scientists for a semester.
