Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints:Local LDS Church Youth Group Served Families In Mexico

Some 150 local youths, ages 14-18, from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints completed a two-month service project on Dec. 2 when some of them delivered 150 cartons of food, water, clothing, bedding and cash contributions to families in need in Tijuana, Mex.

This was the second year that this service project, which started on Oct. 29 during the LDS Church’s Youth Conference Kickoff, was done.

The youths involved are members of seven congregations from La Cañada Flintridge, La Crescenta, Sunland and Tujunga. Large boxes were placed in three local LDS Church buildings to collect donations.

On Nov. 11, as part of their annual Youth Conference, all of the youths collected donations from around the community.

Many also participated in the Scouting for Food program sponsored by the Boy Scouts of America, Verdugo Hills Council, placing bags to and collecting food donations from 1,000 homes in the community.

Additionally, high school seniors packaged flour, rice, beans and other food stuffs at the LDS Church dry pack cannery off Soto Street in downtown Los Angeles.

On Dec. 2, 50 of these youths and 20 adults traveled to Mexico to distribute the provisions with the help of 30 youths from Tijuana. They also played soccer and volleyball.

According to President David Zamarripa Navarro of the Central Tijuana Stake of the LDS Church, the families who received the goods were grateful for the generosity of those who donated them. “These items will really help the needy here in our area,” he said.
