La Cañada Girls’ Lacrosse Undefeated

The La Cañada girls’ lacrosse team defeated three opponents in the Rose Bowl Lacrosse Tournament to go undefeated for the weekend. Coached by Alison Dodson, the 15-girl team competed along with 31 other teams from around the greater Southern California area. The tournament featured 24 high school teams playing CIF sanctioned games as well as eight club teams.

The La Cañada team started the day by defeating the Conejo Renegades 8-0. In the second match they defeated the OCLA- Sacagawea by a score of 4-2. Finally, La Cañada tied the La Quinta High school varsity team at 4-4 in a hard fought battle.

Scores for La Cañada were contributed by Lucy Dodson, Laura McClelland, Camille Newcombe and Hannah Pietzman. The team defense was lead by Molly Pietzman and goalkeeper Caroline Gordon, supported by defenders Katie Freeze and Kelly Gregg.

The 7/8 team continued to improve, using speed, quick passing and fixed plays to defeat the mostly older opponents. Coach Dodson was pleased wit the team’s performance.

“I am delighted with them, they have worked hard and played as a team,” Dodson said. “They supported each other and ran new plays. We had a lot of fun.”

Girls’ lacrosse in Southern California is experiencing explosive growth as the sport’s popularity has spread. Girls from La Cañada are currently participating in lacrosse at a 7/8 level and hope to form a CIF varsity team in high school.
