Palm Crest Students Place in California State Chess Championships

On March 3 and 4, three brothers from the Palm Crest Elementary School Chess Club competed in the California Super State Chess Tournament.

Chiron Burl, a first grader, placed fourth in the K-1 division.

Titan Burl, a third grader, placed third in the K-3 U550 division.

Orion Burl, a sixth grader, placed 20th in the tough K-6 Open division.

All three boys, along with other members of the PCE team, will also compete in the Western States Scholastic Chess Championship in Ventura in early May.

The PCE chess club meets once a week with coach Jay Stallings. During their meetings, students are given a chess lesson, work in their lesson books and get the opportunity to play other students. The kids earn points for all games and work done, which they can then redeem for chess prizes. In addition, some of the members, like the Burl brothers, play in chess tournaments throughout the Southern California region.
