Spartan Freshman Baseball Continues Winning Streak
The Spartan freshman baseball team prevailed 9-8 against Temple City on March 29 in a closely contested game.
La Cañada was leading 8-6 heading into the seventh inning when Temple City scored two runs to tie the score.
Josh Hanson walked to start the bottom of the seventh, and then stole second and third base. Troy Marderosian singled home Hanson to secure the victory.
Cole Kendall pitched six strong innings for La Cañada, striking out four and allowing five hits.
The La Cañada offense had three hits a piece from Michael Knopf and Marderosian, two hits from Ben Drake, a triple from Paul Lee, and singles from Adam Overgaard, Michael Lee, Kendall and Hanson.
The Spartans also beat Pasadena 14-0 last Tuesday to improve their record to 8-1.
La Cañada scored 10 runs in the first inning, and the game ended after 5 innings because of the 10-run mercy rule. Cole Kendall and Harry Kightlinger both hit home runs for La Cañada. Ben Drake doubled, Eric Borlund singled, and Adam Overgaard reached base five times and scored three runs.
Pitchers Michael Knopf, Michael Lee, Overgaard and Drake combined for a one-hit shutout.
Last Wednesday the La Cañada Spartans were looking to redeem their only loss, a 7-5 set back, to league rival Monrovia.
Monrovia led 4-0 heading into the fifth inning, but the Spartans demonstrated strong come back abilities.
La Canada scored five unanswered runs, receiving two hits apiece from Ben Drake, Michael Lee, Adam Overgaard and Michael Knopf, and one hit from Cole Kendall.
Monrovia scored one run in the bottom of the seventh inning, and the game ended in a 5-5 tie.
Cole Kendall pitched six solid innings for the Spartans and registered four strikeouts.
La Cañada played error-free defense, and catcher Josh Hanson threw out three Monrovia base runners.
The Spartans’ record is now 8-1-1, 4-1-1 in league.
The freshman team will host South Pasadena on April 18 at 3:30 p.m. They then host San Marino on April 20.
