Tennis to Take a Swing at CIF

Spartan boys’ tennis competed in the Rio Hondo League individuals tournament last weekend, sending their No. 1 singles player into the final rounds of competition.

Freshman Greg Lee, seeded No. 4 in the tournament, lost in the semifinal match to San Marino senior Avan Gerganson, 6-2 and 6-1.

“The future is bright for Greg,” said Spartan Head Coach Will Moravec. “To be the fourth best in league and still have some years to go, that’s great.”

Doubles team Daniel Oh and Dylan Fraser also took a loss from San Marino in the second round.

“Our results were very expected,” Moravec said. His team finished second overall in the Rio Hondo League after a three-way tie between Temple City, San Marino and La Cañada was broken by a coin toss.

“We were very excited about that,” Moravec said.

Today, the team enters into team CIF play where each school competes against other qualifying schools, tallying up communal scores to create one composite score for each school.

The first round of play takes place today at 3 p.m. at Pasadena Poly; winners will advance to round two on Saturday.
