Kumon Math and Reading Centers, a year-round after school supplemental education program, announces the opening of its newest La Canada location at 1051 Foothill Blvd in La Cañada.
Instructor Eva Hosoda encourages parents and their children to stop by anytime between 3 and 6 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. At this event, parents will be given the opportunity to schedule a free placement test for their children. Kumon representatives will be present to answer any questions about the program and enrollment.
Hosoda is a graduate of UCLA, with dual bachelor’s degrees in Japanese and Asian-American studies. She has undergone extensive training for the past year and has earned her license to own and operate La Cañada Kumon Math and Reading Center.
Hosoda, a former Kumon student, began the program at the age of 4 under one of the most respected Kumon instructors, Mr. Nishio. In kindergarten, she received the pre-school Linear Equation Award for solving algebraic equations before starting first grade.
By fourth grade, she had completed the entire program.
Hosoda is bilingual in Japanese and English and is involved in community relations and service.
The Kumon Method of learning was developed in 1958 in Japan by Toru Kumon, a high school math teacher whose son was struggling with second grade arithmetic. As an educator, Kumon realized that a strong foundation of the basics was needed for success in higher level math. With that in mind, Kumon created a series of worksheets for his son to do after school.
Through daily practice and a commitment to mastering each concept, his son was able to solve differential equations and integral calculus problems by the time he was in sixth grade.
The same technique is used today at each Kumon Math and Reading Center in all 43 countries.
