Softball Camp a Place to Learn

Softball is a highly nuanced, complex sport that has been embraced by girls across the country as their own.
The La Cañada Spartan Softball Camp is dedicated to passing on the beloved pastime to the next generation of players.
At the camp, LCHS junior varsity coach Lindsay Monroe and La Cañada Elementary educator Barb Drange teach these budding stars the basics of the game and show them the value of teamwork in the process.
Girls from grades first to eighth and at all skill levels gathered together this week to learn from the masters.
Some see the sport as a hobby, while others are surprisingly dedicated to the game.
Kelly Jacobs from La Cañada is a die-hard UCLA fan who hopes to one day play for the Bruins.
“I like Whitney Holum,” a Bruins outfielder, she replied, when asked who she admired.
Monroe was assisted by high school players from the La Cañada junior varsity and varsity teams.
“The girls like to have role models,” Monroe said.
Spartan Cami Martin said that she and her peers in the program enjoy to “put what [they’ve] learned into the kids.”
The girls in the program have fun in the sun and learn valuable life lessons in the process.
The goal of the camp can be summed up in the mantra on the back of their T-shirts, which read “Love the game, keep it fun, 100% effort, positive attitude.”
