Ten Years Ago

A press release was issued announcing that the largest, state-of-the-art Vons grocery store in La Cañada Flintridge would be constructed as part of the proposed Sport Chalet shopping center. (When that project did not come to fruition, Safeway, the parent company of Vons, purchased Plaza de La Cañada on Foothill at Oakwood and now has plans in place for a new Vons store there.)

Twenty Years Ago

La Cañada Flintridge resident Michael Gross, star of TV’s “Family Ties,” joined Verdugo Hills Hospital’s Careful Cat mascot in urging families to begin a smoke-free tradition during the Great American Smokeout of 1987.

Thirty Years Ago

After 14 terms and 28 years of public service in Sacramento, state Assemblyman Frank Lanterman of La Cañada Flintridge officially announced his retirement. Lanterman, considered by many to be “the dean” of the Assembly, turned 76 on Nov. 4, 1977.

Forty Years Ago

A helicopter was used in the installation of a fire escape ladder on an upper floor at Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy. The fire escape was donated to the school by Brisbane Iron Works in Los Angeles.

Fifty Years Ago

Delegates from the Flintridge chapter of National Assistance League attended the annual meeting of the organization. The event was held at the Santa Barbara Biltmore.
