Special Childrens League Benefit
Foothill Committee of the Special Children’s League celebrated another successful year with the installation of new officers and lunch at the Cafe Bizou in Old Town Pasadena. President Mary Achterman introduced special guests Dr. Ron Cohen, executive director of UCP, Marguarete Preusser and Shannon Vukkulcic. Cohen installed the officers of the committee with words of encouragement for continued success with their activities in the new year. New officers officers are co-presidents Gwen Brown and Joan Peters, secretary Ruth Lyle and treasurer Mary Achterman.
The highlight of the meeting was the presentation of a check to Cohen for $22,000, which was raised with gifts to the Angel Letter fund and support from the Hirsch Foundation and the Dragon Thrift Shop.
Cohen reported on the advancement and progress of United Cerebral Palsy and Special Children’s League efforts in providing needed services..

Fiesta Party benefits Family Services
Los Altos Auxiliary recently hosted a summer “fiesta” at the home of member Michele Sanchez in Hancock Park. The party, featuring a mariachi band, margaritas and a silent auction, raised $6,700 for Hathaway-Sycamores Child and Family Services. Guests at the party included. Michael and Diane Poryes of La Cañada.
Wine & Gourmet Food Tasting
More than 100 different wines will be sampled when the 6th Annual La Cañada Flintridge Wine & Gourmet Food Tasting event is held from 2-6 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 14 at Memorial Park. The Kiwanis Club of La Cañada has teamed up with the La Cañada Flintridge Educational Foundation Endowment Fund and the Community Center of La Cañada Flintridge to put on another delightful day. Proceeds from the ticket sales, as well as silent and live auctions, will benefit the schools and children in the community through the Educational Foundation, as well as children who are in need of assistance, through the Kiwanis Club.
“We are excited for another great event this year. This event is a good way to support the community and enjoy a vast array of wines and foods,” states Clyde Hemphill, who is one of the co-chairs, along with Mary Gant, putting the event together. For information about the event, call (818) 790-9901.
