Boys into finals

La Cañada boys’ soccer team continues to roll in the La Cañada Tournament, defeating Santa Clara and Village Christian and tying Salesian.

La Cañada first sailed to victory over Santa Clara in a 6-0 drubbing, with Matt Cannata getting a hat trick. Though the Spartans won the game easily, they lost Garret Gray in 16th minute with an ankle injury and haven’t gotten him back, though La Cañada Head Coach Jordan Jones said he’ll likely return before league play.

“It’s better to have him in league than to have him in a pre-season tourney,” Jones said.

On the next game, a tense match against Salesian, the Spartans found themselves down for the first time in the tournament when Salesian put up a score in the 56th minute.

The Spartans retaliated, though, in the 63rd when Danny Thompson threaded a pass to Aayush Shah who put a left-footer past the goalkeeper.

The game ended 1-1.

La Cañada, not satisfied with a tie against Salesian, took it out on Village Christian, 6-0. Diego Ruano had two goals in the game.

“I thought we played well when we touched the ball,” Ruano said.

Shah then walked over.

“You see this guy? His two goals were all luck,” Shah said to Ruano, jokingly.

“He’s just mad because he didn’t score,” Ruano retorted.

La Cañada played Burbank late Tuesday for the championship, too late to report in today’s paper. Check the website, www.lacanadaonline.com, for the score and game info.
