Boys’ soccer takes first league game

La Cañada (14-2-3) opened its Rio Hondo League season with an impressive defensive performance last Friday, shutting out South Pasadena, 1-0. In the first half Spartan defenders Ryan Upton, Randy Gartside, Diego Ruano, Arshia Zare, Aiden Apel, and goalkeeper Jack Hale repeatedly turned back South Pasadena’s offense.

With three minutes left in the game, a crossing pass by Diego Ruano eluded the South Pasadena goalie and Matt McKenzie knocked in the lone goal. The Spartans continued to press the attack with several near misses but the game ended 1-0.
