Go abroad without leaving the country with The La Cañada Kiwanis on April 18, as the organization presents “Corsica and the Rivieras,” its next program in a series of travel films.

Corsica is an island footprint in the Mediterranean with its big toe pointing north to the French Riviera and Italy’s Riviera di Oriente. The film, presented by Stan Walsh, explores all three, the rugged historic Corsica and the glittering coastline of the Italian and French Riviera.

Travel along route nationale N193 through the high mountain hinterland of Corsica, Bashia, Corte Ajaccio and the impressive Pont du Vecchiu road and railway bridges. Gustave Eiffel designed the RR bridge in 1825. The artistic road bridge was done in 1999.

Breakfast with British trekkers in Bocognano, Bashia. View Napoleon’s Elbe in the boyhood home of Columbus. Ride the CFC narrow gauge railway via Ponte Leccia to Calvi, which also claims Columbus to be a native son. Enjoy a wild ride back to Ponte Leccia to journey along the Gravone to Ajaccio, capital city of Corsica where the ghost of Napoleon hovers at dusk. Stroll through the open air market, the town hall museum, the Emperor’s memorabilia. Visit Filitosa Stone bridge, Aleria, Mariana, the Roman Legion retirement village and the tortoise sanctuary featuring 125 species from five continents.

Enjoy the Bed and Breakfast at Bonifacio, the dancers from nearby Sardinia and the choppy seas to the legendary Cannes on the French Riveria.

Walsh has a taste for the unknown and shares his passion for far-away places with travel film audiences all over America.

The film will be presented at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the Flintridge Preparatory School, located at the corner of Foothill Boulevard and Crown Avenue in La Cañada Flintridge. Preprogram entertainment featuring Tom Burrows piano melodies will begin at 7:10 p.m. Tickets may be purchased at the door for $8.

The proceeds from this series will help fund the youth programs of the La Cañada Kiwanis Foundation. This non-profit Foundation sponsors the Key clubs at both LCHS and Flintridge Prep. More than 200 young people are involved in these programs and they join the Kiwanis family in the community in annually providing hundreds of hours of service to the community. The Foundation also contributes to many local service projects and to youth organizations, both local and international.

For information call the Kiwanis Club at (818) 790-9901. Tickets may be purchased at the door or by mail from the La Cañada Kiwanis, PO Box 112, La Cañada, CA 91012.
