Nearly 30,000 visitors used the Information Resource Center (known as the IRC) on the La Cañada High School campus between last September and the end of January this year, according to officials at the La Cañada Flintridge Educational Foundation.
The IRC , a joint-use library and computer center built and run by the La Cañada Unified School District and the city of La Cañada Flintridge, not only serves students, but also welcomes the public during specific hours of the week.
At the IRC, the salary for a full-time library media teacher, Lindsay Bozzani, is funded each year by the LCF Educational Foundation, which last week released facts about how many La Cañadans used the IRC in the first semester of the 2008-’09 school year:
•15,890 students in grades 7 through 12 (454 classes of 35 students) visited the library with their teachers.
•Another 5,581 students visited the IRC during class periods with a teacher’s pass.
•During joint-use hours from 3:30 to 8 p.m. on Mondays through Thursdays, an additional 7,988 students and members of the public used the facility.
“From September 2008 through January 2009, a grand total of 29,459 users took advantage of the incredible asset that is the IRC, which is managed so well by the LCFEF-funded Lindsay Bozzani,” said Deborah Weirick, 2008-2009 president, LCFEF.
“Without funding from the Foundation, our school district would be hard pressed to find the funds to pay this incredible professional who works directly with our students, both during and after school,” Weirick continued. “The IRC has been compared to a small college’s library, which is a pretty big resource for a small town like La Cañada, and Lindsay is the one who makes it a true academic haven for students and the public alike.”
