Costa hearing continued

A bail hearing that was to be held Wednesday for big rig driver Marcos Costa, who has been indicted on two counts of murder in the April 1 runaway truck collision in La Cañada Flintridge, has been continued to July 10 in Pasadena Superior Court.

According to Jane Robison, spokeswoman for Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office, Costa was in court Wednesday, but attorneys on both sides agreed to continue the case. Costa’s bail remains at $2.09 million.

On June 11, a Los Angeles County grand jury returned an indictment against Costa of two counts of murder, vehicular manslaughter and three felony counts of reckless driving causing specified injury. The decision was unsealed on June 19 after Costa appeared in Pasadena Superior Court.

“This is not a criminal case, it is a non-criminal accident,” said Costa’s attorney Steve Meister. “It is not a criminal case, least of all murder.”

On April 1 Costa drove his big rig car carrier from Antelope Valley (14) Freeway over Angeles National Forest Highway and Angeles Crest Highway, losing his brakes as he approached ACH’s terminus at Foothill Boulevard.

Angel Posca, 58, and his 12-year-old daughter Angelina, both from Palmdale, had just exited eastbound from the Foothill (210) Freeway and started to turn left onto the ‘Crest when the truck struck them and dragged their vehicle to Foothill Boulevard, killing both victim. Costa then hit other vehicles which started a chain reaction of crashes with the big rig ended plowing through Flintridge Bookstore and Coffee House.

Costa, 44, from Massachusetts, was originally arrested shortly after the crash and had been released on bail until last Friday morning.

He was rearrested outside the Pasadena Superior Court where he had been scheduled to appear.

“He is doing his best to get through this,” Meister said. “He is relying on his deep religious faith and the love of his family.”
