CLASSES

American Heart Assn. CPR & First Aid — Aug. 12 and 19. 6 p.m. Class sizes are limited and both certifications are for two years. The Heartsaver/AED (CPR) course, taught on Aug. 12, covers adult, child and infant CPR. The class lasts approximately three hours. The History of Roses—July 31 9 a.m. Sponsored by Descanso Gardens, a workshop will held where horticulturist Amanda Everett will discuss the many types of current roses in bloom. The workshop will also feature a walk in Descanso’s 5-acre Rose garden. The cost of the workshop is $12 for the general public and is free for Descanso members. Watermelon Festival — Aug. 13, 5 p.m. to 11 p.m.; Aug. 14, 12 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.; and Aug. 15, 12 p.m.to 10:30 p.m. Sponsored by the Sunland-Tujunga Lions Club, the 49th annual Watermelon Festival will be held at Sunland Park, 8651 Foothill Blvd., Sunland. The event will feature carnival rides, watermelon eating contests and watermelon carving demonstrations. Proceeds go to the Sunland-Tujunga Lions Club, which raises money to support others. National Night Out — Aug. 3, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sponsored by the Crescenta Valley Sheriff’s Station, the 27th annual National Night Out will be held at Ralphs Fresh Air Market, 2675 Foothill Blvd., La Crescenta and Memorial Park at 1201 Foothill Blvd., La Cañada.. The event will feature free safety pamphlets, child fingerprinting, and giveaways.

Low Cost Pet Vaccination Clinic — Aug. 11, 6:30 p.m.to 8 p.m. The Pasadena Humane Society and SPCA is offering a low cost vaccination clinic for dogs and cats. All dogs must be on a leash and cats must be in a carrier. Dog licenses for Arcadia, San Marino and La Cañada Flintridge will be available for purchase. Evolution of American Jazz — July 29, 5:30 p.m.-7 p.m. Descanso Gardens will feature Kristin Korb as she performs “California Cool” jazz as part of the summer-long jazz series. Picnics and blankets are allowed. The concert is free with garden admission. $8 adults, $6 seniors and students (must present ID) and $3 children 5-12. Spontaneous Fantasia: The Omnicentric Universe — July 31, Aug. 8, 7 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. The Glendale Planetarium at Glendale Community College will feature a live virtual reality performance created by high-tech artist J-Walt. Suitable for ages 5 and up. Online tickets are $6 for kids and $10 for adults. Door prices are $6 for kids and $15 for adults. REUNIONS

La Cañada High School Class of 1970 — Oct. 8-9. A cocktail party will be held beginning at 6 p.m. Oct. 8 at the Pasadena Hilton; the 40-year reunion dinner is set for 6 p.m. Oct. 9, also at the Pasadena Hilton, 168 S. Los Robles.
