Boosters almost miss milestone

Friday will make it four decades since the La Cañada Boosters Club originated in 1970. This detail was nearly overlooked by the club itself.

Steve Brown, a club director, was surprised when asked if there were any plans to celebrate the Oct. 15 anniversary. There has been little time for Boosters to reflect on their history, as they’re putting the finishing touches on the club’s Nov. 6 dinner and auction fundraiser.

“We really weren’t aware of it,” Brown said. “We’ve kind of been focused on getting the job done.”

Since 1970, the organization’s task has been to raise money for extracurricular activities at La Cañada High School. As a result, junior-high sports, school clubs and extracurricular activities have increased at the school, Brown said.

“It’s really exciting and it’s kind of humbling because so many people have gone before us,” Brown said. “It’s really amazing [Boosters] has gone on for so long.”

All athletic uniforms have been paid for by Boosters since its inception. The group doesn’t donate to just sports, though. In fact, 40% of the funds the group raises go to non-athletic programs.

“Most boosters are sports-only, but we recognize the fact that extracurricular activities of all sorts are important to the school and the students,” Brown said. “Our goal is to give kids the most well-rounded high-school experience.”

Boosters will strive toward meeting that goal again this year with their annual dinner auction. The event starts at 6:30 p.m. and is being held at the Oakmont Country Club. Funds raised will go toward updating La Cañada High’s PE lockers. Jim Stratton, superintendent of La Cañada Unified School District, will be honored at the auction for his decades of leadership and dedication to the district.

Single tickets are $125, but for extra value, Booster memberships of $350 come with two or more tickets to the auction. Tickets can be purchased in advance online at https://www.spartanboosters.org or by e-mailing spartanboosters@gmail.com. For information call Jim Moore at (818) 790-8992.
