Mary Edna Wood McLain died Oct. 7, after a brief illness. She would have been 82 on Nov. 8.

Born in Henderson, Ky., she had lived in La Cañada since 1966. She volunteered in the schools, supported her children’s scouting activities and was a La Cañada Thursday Club officer. A noted gardener, she earned the La Cañada Valley Beautiful Award four times.

Surviving her are Donald, her husband of nearly 60 years; son Robert Felix, daughter-in-law Becky and grandson Robert Donald of Cleveland Ohio; daughter Virginia Rusk, son-in-law Fred, and grandchildren Jessica Anne and grandson-in-law John Smallenburg, Mary Morgan and Fred Mason of South Pasadena; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were in Henderson, Ky. and a memorial service was held Wednesday at Cabot and Sons in Pasadena. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts should be directed to a charity of your choice, or to Descanso Gardens in La Cañada.
