The musical “Grease” was playing to packed houses in the auditorium at La Cañada High School. Directed by choral teacher LoriMarie Rios, the lead roles were held by Gavin Caswell, Nikki Wetzel, Charlie Young and Kim Lottman.

The Citizens’ Bank branch in La Cañada Flintridge was robbed of $1,892 by a man wearing a business suit and wielding a semi-automatic pistol. Although he successfully escaped from the crime scene, he was arrested four days later after holding up a bank in Agoura Hills.

Thirty Years Ago

A man with a knife forced his way into a home near the La Cañada Flintridge Country Club and robbed the occupants of $50 cash, a wallet and an address book. At home at the time were a housekeeper, a family relative and the homeowners’ 3-year-old daughter.

A 55-mile section of Angeles Crest Highway north of La Cañada was officially designated as a state scenic highway.

The La Cañada Flintridge Young Republican Club announced that Ronald Reagan, a “motion-picture actor and political lecturer” would speak at its May 25, 1961 meeting, a potluck dinner event to be held in a private home in the 5100 block of Alta Canyada Road.

Parents of children poised to enter the first, second and third grades at both of La Cañada’s then-existing elementary school campuses learned their youngsters would go on half-day schedules during the fall of 1951 due to a shortage of classroom space.
