Ten Years Ago

A $25,000 fire at Palm Crest Elementary School was believed to be related to a burglary that occurred the same evening as the fire. After the fire, a plumber doing work for the school district found a duffel bag on the campus containing items that had been taken from Room 821: a fire extinguisher, jars of glitter, a bag of frozen peas (still cold), medical supplies and a computer speaker.

Twenty Years Ago

“Big River,” a musical based on Mark Twain’s “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,” was the 1991 production of the Foothill Youth Summer Theatre, featuring a cast of 54 area teens and younger children.

Thirty Years Ago

A community swimming program underway at the La Cañada High School pool was made possible by the Youth House, Crescenta-Cañada YMCA, LCF Chamber of Commerce and the La Cañada Unified School District. Lessons were available in swimming, diving and water ballet. Community swim times were available on weekends and there was no charge for admission.

Forty Years Ago

Several hundred guests were expected to attend the Western Barbecue at the Emmett Doherty house on Berkshire Avenue. The event was a fundraiser for Flintridge Guild of Children’s Hospital.

Fifty Years Ago

The Citizens Committee on School Organization reported to the La Cañada school board that after 10 weeks of study, the committee had concluded that acreage along Oak Grove Drive known as the Spalding property and used for equestrian activities was the most desirous site for establishing a high school campus.

Sixty Years Ago

Seven-year-old twin La Cañada boys, reportedly inspired by a story they watched on television, took off from their Rosebank Lane home one summer morning on an adventure. When it was discovered they were missing, 20 sheriff’s reserve deputies combed the local canyons with no luck. But at 10 p.m. Glendale police picked them up at Verdugo Park, where they had spent the day well-fed by picnickers.
