CLASSES

Square Dance for Beginners — Thursdays, beginning Sept. 22, 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Sets in Step Square Dance Club sponsors classes for beginners and those who want to refresh their knowledge. The classes are held at the Community Center of La Cañada Flintridge, 4469Chevy Chase Drive. Couples and singles welcome. Cost is $6; first three dances free. Babysitting course for youths — Saturdays, Sept. 24, Oct. 29 and Nov. 26, 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The Verdugo Hills Hospital Beginnings program offers babysitting courses to boys and girls ages 11-15. The one-day course is interactive and includes lessons in many skills needed by babysitters. Participants will receive a certificate of completion. Classes take place at the hospital, 1812 Verdugo Blvd., Glendale. Fee is $35 per person. Reservations are required and can be made by calling (818) 952-2272.

LCF Chamber Mixer, “Summer Sock Hop Celebration” — Thursday, Sept. 15, 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The city of La Cañada Flintridge is sponsoring the September mixer for the LCF Chamber of Commerce and Community Association. The mixer will be held in Olberz Park, 905 Town Center Drive, La Cañada. Burgers, fries, onion rings, malts and Elvis will all be featured. Food provided by Los Gringos Locos. Fifties attire is requested. Cost is $8 for Chamber members; $20 for guests.

Montrose Art Walk and Sale — Saturday, Sept. 17, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. This free event is recognized as one of the largest open-air fine-art events in the Foothills. It is set up along the 2300 and 2400 blocks of Honolulu Avenue and features the works of more than 30 artists. For more information, call (818) 249-7171.

Moonday Poetry Reading — Sunday, Sept. 18, 2 p.m. Poet Cecilia Woloch will be featured when Moonday East presents a poetry reading at Flintridge Bookstore, 1010 Foothill Blvd. There will also be an open mic at the event, which is hosted on the third Sunday of every month by Alice Pero and Lois P. Wine and Gourmet Food Tasting, Premium Wine Auction — Sunday, Sept. 25. Wine tasting, 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.; live auction, 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. This event is held in Memorial Park, 1301 Foothill Blvd., La Cañada Flintridge. It is presented by the Kiwanis Club of La Cañada, Le Petit Vendome, La Cañada Flintridge Educational Foundation Endowment Fund, La Cañada Flintridge Chamber of Commerce and Verdugo Hills Hospital Foundation. GARDENING WORKSHOPS

Fall Organic Vegetable Gardening — Saturday, Sept. 17, 11 a.m. Mike Brown, display horticulturalist at Descanso Gardens, teaches the benefits of organic gardening. The class will also include lessons on the importance of planning a garden, maintaining its vitality and prepping it for the next season. Native Plant Uses — Saturday, Sept. 24, 10 a.m. Rachel Young, a horticulturalist at Descanso Gardens, demonstrates the practical uses of native plants for food, medicine and crafting. PERFORMANCE

Free Family Concert — Saturday, Sept. 24, 7:30 p.m. The Pasadena Symphony and Pops offers a free outdoor concert at Pasadena City Hall Centennial Square. The concert will feature selections from “Sound of Music,” “Les Miserables,” “ Phantom of the Opera,” “Chicago,” “My Fair Lady” and others. The concert is preceded at 5:30 p.m. by children’s activities. Food trucks will be on site selling meals. Guests are encouraged to bring low-back chairs or blankets to sit on. Coming to America Transformations — Saturday, Oct. 1, 2 p.m. Broadway and television actress Stephanie Satie will perform her one-woman show at the La Cañada Flintridge Library, 4545 Oakwood Ave. The one-hour play features Satie as a gallery of women whose lives have been transformed.
