La Cañada Unified School District Supt. Lorie Gonia accepted a buy-out package of a little more than $200,000 and resigned her position. “Philosophical differences” were cited by both the school board and Gonia as the reason for her departure.

Apparently having used door keys to gain access, burglars struck at least three times at Flintridge Prep during the second half of August 1991, getting away with approximately $34,700 worth of computer equipment and other electronics.

Thirty Years Ago

An 11-year-old La Cañada boy was taken into custody on charges of burglarizing two homes in his Crown Avenue neighborhood after his mother turned him in to the authorities. He was accused of taking two children’s watches, some toys and $5. The youngster was released to his mother after questioning.

Forty Years Ago

The marriage of Maureen Finch to John Shaw brought President Richard Nixon to La Cañada, accompanied by his wife Pat and their daughter Julie. The service was held at La Cañada Presbyterian Church and the reception followed in the gardens of a local home. The Nixons had known the bride since she was a child; her father, Robert Finch, was a former lieutenant governor of California and, from 1969 to 1974, was a member of Nixon’s cabinet.

Officials with the newly-unified La Cañada School District were considering asking voters to approve a bond that would raise funds to build a high school in town, as well as add a kindergarten space, faculty room and cafeteria to Palm Crest Elementary School.

Under the headline, “Never fear, those mosquitoes are doomed,” the Valley Sun reported that the La Cañada Chamber of Commerce and Community Association, on behalf of the Rancho neighborhood on the east side of town, had secured a promise from the county that the lake above Devil’s Gate Dam would be drained into the Arroyo Seco in an attempt to abate a mosquito problem.
