Marching Spartans win Western Bands competition

The LCHS Marching Spartans captured the first-place trophy in their division at the Western Bands field show competition on Saturday, Oct. 22. The competition was held in Ontario.

The marching band’s field show, “Land of the Free,” is a salute to American history. The LCHS ColorGuard also won first place, while the LCHS Drum Line was awarded second place in their respective divisions.

La Cañada High orchestra held fall concert

The LCHS Orchestra kicked off the 2011-12 school year with its fall concert last Wednesday, Oct. 26. Conducted by Kyle Smith, the 7th-8th grade orchestra started off the concert with Mozart’s Contredanse en Rondeau and the Halloween-appropriate Danse Macrabre by Saint-Saëns.

Next up, the 9th-12th grade orchestra, conducted by Connie Speltz, performed Brook Green Suite by Holst and Brandenburg Concerto #3 by J.S. Bach. In addition, the orchestra featured the Orpheus Chamber Ensemble and a cello ensemble in which selected students worked out their interpretation of the pieces and performed with a conductor.

In response to the successful concert, LCHS Orchestra parents have decided to start a volunteer-run Friends of LCHS Music network, which will provide subscribers with information on and updates about upcoming LCHS musical performances. LCHS honors ‘Artists of the Month’

The Art Department at LCHS honored six students as Artists of the Month for October. The students, with their respective art classes, are: Dan Alvarez, (Media Arts), Dave Andersen (Media Arts), Taylor Hall-Smith (Beginning Ceramics), Michael Park (Art 8), Yoo Jin Kim (Art 8) and John Lee (Independent Project).
