Man, 71, dies in Angeles Crest motorcycle crash

A motorcyclist died Sunday after crashing into a guard rail near mile marker 69 on Angeles Crest Highway, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Gil Hernandez.

Richard Shumway, 71, of Yorba Linda, was riding his 1978 Yamaha on Angeles Crest near Wrightwood at approximately 12:07 p.m. when he drifted into the shoulder of the road, lost control of his bike and crashed into a guard rail, according to Hernandez.

Paramedics were dispatched via helicopter, but Shumway was declared dead at the scene of the crash.

Hernandez said that the cause of death could not be confirmed until a coroner’s report is performed and the crash remains under investigation.

The crash caused CHP to shut down the section of the highway near Wrightwood for several hours.
