Update: Flash-flood warning as Foothills pelted by hailstorm

The skies over La Cañada Flintridge and surrounding cities erupted with thunder, lightning and a brief hailstorm on Thursday afternoon.

Weather forecasters issued a flash flooding alert until 4:45 p.m. as the storm passed overhead, bringing with it hail, lightning and periodic downpours across the region, including in Glendale and Pasadena. The National Weather Service reported more than an inch of rain within 30 minutes at a monitoring station in Pasadena.

Fast-moving water flowed down Ocean View Boulevard and into the nearby Mullaly flood control basin, but there appeared to be little mud or debris coming down from this hillsides, Crescenta Valley Sheriff’s Station Sgt. Debra Herman said around 3 p.m.

Herman also said there appeared to be a transformer or tree fire in La Cañada, possibly caused by a lightning strike, and another in Altadena. Los Angeles County firefighters also responded to a brush fire off Tujunga Canyon Road near the Angeles National Forest — also possibly caused by lightning, said Herman.

Flooding was reported at a home in the 5400 block of Godbey Drive in La Cañada, said Los Angeles County Fire Capt. Tom Richards. A patrol vehicle was at the home, where flooding appeared to minor, he added.

Pasadena Fire Department spokeswoman Lisa Derderian said her agency fielded several calls about downed wires and was investigating a call about flooding at Odyssey Charter Schoolon West Altadena Drive.

Derderian said residents seeking sandbags to protect their homes from floods could go to Station 38 at 1150 Linda Vista Avenue or Station 37 at 3430 E. Foothill Blvd.

Pebble-size hail pelted La Cañada Flintridge for 10 minutes or more around 2:40 p.m. The curb lane of Foothill Boulevard in La Cañada became impassable for a short period, with several inches of water making it unsafe for cars to stay in the lane.
